Okay guys, I recently purchased a brand new MC for my '69 and since I haven't replaced one of these before I wanted to determine the best way to prep and paint the new one.

How do you clean off the residue (oil) from the MC before paint?

I've gathered that no matter what you do they will rust in no time, but I was curious if there are any steps to take to keep this from happening so quickly.

Would a rust encapsilator help?
Followed by a primer?
Followed by paint?

Mainly just looking for your experiences.

As you know, I just set up my new master cylinder that I had powder coated. In the bleeding phase I spilled brakefluid on it a few times over the course of an hour & it did not bubble, peel or run. I am unaware of conventional paint that can withstand brakefluid. Still looks great. Go powder coat! Lasts & withstands brakefluid.

I just clean really good with lacquer thinner, then use self etching primer, then some "cast" looking paint from your local auto parts store. Also silicone (DOT 5) brake fluid will not harm paint like conventional brake fluid.

I just use Eastwoods stainless steel coating, used the same can for 15 years, just had to thin it out over time. Brake fliud doesn't seem to bother it and I use it on my exhaust manifolds. Just wipe the M/C down with thinner

POR-15? I painted mine with it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I had already disconnected my blast cabinet or I would have given the POR something more to grab on to. As is it is holding up well, but the new fluid peeled up the edges around the reservoir a slight amount.

I just cleaned mine then shot it with some clear for the natural cast look.

Clean with thinner, or wax/grease remover. Leddzep, painted his MC with this, and had good results.

I have painted the ramhorns (came out awesome),but need to purchase a new MC and paint it as well.

Here is the booster on my Roadrunner, it was a rebuilt unit as well, I used laquer thinner and then painted it with Dupli-Color cast iron engine paint. Suppose to be pretty good stuff, I did get some fluid on it while bleeding the brakes and wiped it right off, it is still fine.

Of course, I would use powdercoating. It's not going to come off with fluid spillage like paint will. I powdercoat all of my brake parts, master cylinder, calipers, everything. I charge 15 bucks to do a new master cylinder body.

Kevin, would you tear it apart, and then rebuild it after it's pc'd? And do you know of any issues that might come from PC'ing a MC? Have you seen any color options that would look close to natural cast?

I don't think it's worth rebuilding one anymore. You can buy a rebuilt one for 20 bucks or so. I just get a rebuilt part, disassemble it, clean it, coat it, and reassemble. Cheapest way to go and you know you have a decent part when you're done.

POR 15 won't stay. Figured it would when I done mine. It was fine till I overfilled it then it peeled/ bubbled right off. I also tried the high heat paint from Autozone, don't waste your money on that either. Fine for a few weeks. I didn't use a prep on the metal, maybe a thinner would help to prep the surface which I will try again later in the week.

My only question about pwdrcoating would be the amount of heat required to cook the coating. What effect that may have on the operation at a later date.

That's kind of what I'm worried about... I guess the MC is just one of those never ending "paint required" pieces.

I keep lots of metal look colors in stock. On something like a master cylinder, I can do just a coating of clear powder. That will seal it from the elements and keep it looking straight out of the box new.

The heat won't affect a thing. I strip the housing to bare cast iron with nothing else inside of it. Once it is powdered, I reassemble it. The closest the rubber and aluminum pieces get to the heat is laying on the workbench in the shop by the oven. Of course, I plug all openings and threaded holes to keep the powder on the outside where it belongs.

POL (Performance OnLine) now sells an aluminum version of your M/C. I wish I would have waited to get one of these for my '69. NO more rust problems!
