Radio ideas
Hey guys, i was pondering ideas for my radio in my 77. I was wondering if anybody knew a company that makes oem radios other than lmc or if you had any ideas or suggestions on a new one like alpines or kenwoods. Feel free to post pics of what you've done.
Thanks, cole

Re: Radio ideas
What I plan to do in mine is a stock\custom setup. Theres a company that sells upgraded stock radios. I think its custom autosound. Some people like their products and some dont. Either way, my plan is to have a stock looking radio with a ipod port in the back. Then Im going to run the ipod cable under the carpet and up into the center console. Then there is a member here who sells 6x9 speaker brackets for each cab corner. With that done, it will look stock and no one would have the incentive to break in for a stereo system, but Ill still have decent tunes.

Re: Radio ideas
^^ that's almost my exact plan too. Classic parts also sells a new radio w/the mp3/iPod hookups for less money but it does not have a digital display.

Re: Radio ideas
Im glad you mentioned that one. Id rather not have the digital display. The more stock looking the better, at least for me right now.

Re: Radio ideas
Another one to look at is RetroSound. I just discovered them and like their products. http://www.retrosoundusa.com/
I hate to be that guy, but I have read bad reports about the quality of Custom AutoSound. So do some research before you buy. Also, supposedly there is somebody out who can rebuild and modify/upgrade stock radios--convert to digital, usb, whatever. Maybe this guy, but on his website, it says discontinued digital conversions. http://www.geocities.com/joesclassiccarradio/ Somebody on this board has gone this route, but it slips my mind. I would like to know a little more about this option personally.

Re: Radio ideas
Yo! Entirely different idea, but a good one for classics,...FRANKENTRUCK is using an ipod "boombox" while I cut the dash and install the Kenwood stereo. It's an Altec Lansing iM7 portable ipod dock. Great sound, volume, and fidelity,...including bass.
I'll use it instead of the cassette stereo in my all origonal '88 RX-7 convertible when I get the trucks' stereo in. That way I don't have to touch ANY of the origonal stuff in the "showroom floor" ricer. I can also move it from car to car, or to my other truck as needed,...or just wherever! I kept the radio from my '73 Chev flatbed if you'd like it. Todd.

Re: Radio ideas
if you want stock, i've heard of a device that acts as a line in and plugs into the antenna wire between the radio and antenna, but never seen one

Re: Radio ideas
Yo! Got one in my '76 Camaros' glovebox. Scosche. Mine's an FM-MOD01, but I find this link to the page for a new version, FMMOD02:
http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID.../productID/417 Provides a male 1/8th inch plug for input from any MP3, iPod, etc,...and transmits on two different stereo FM channels in case of interferance on one of the channels. Never encountered any interferance. Does quite well. Todd.

Re: Radio ideas
Cole, I got my radio from Crutchfield, as I didn't want to cut up the dash. Never got around to installing it though. Been sitting in my garage since 1991....

Re: Radio ideas
I bought an old school Road Gear analog 30 watt am/fm cass. w/RCA mini jack input in the front retail for $15 about 10 years ago.
It's still in the original packaging and I am going to install it (in my 1986) when I replace the dashpad and the front speakers. It's main usage will to be the amplifier for my new $207 netbook computer. The days of fumbling and dealing with skipping cds are over now that you can buy a 16GB flash drive for $23.

Re: Radio ideas
I put a Dual XC4100 in my '77 K5 a couple of months ago. It as aux-in in the front and pre-amp out. I got a cheap active crossover and a powered 12" sub from Fry's Electronics and stuck in an old school Punch 45. Thing doesn't sound half bad! I didn't want to cut the dash, so for $39 it was well worth it.
Tuner does kinda suck, but much of that could be due to the in glass antenna...

Re: Radio ideas
I'd say it's the in glass antenna, my stock radio is horrible to tune I can only get the 2 closest stations on it.

Re: Radio ideas
Has anyone used those under dash antenna's? I was just wondering if they picked up reception any better than the windshield antenna? That or is there a way to maybe link the two together to get stronger reception.

Re: Radio ideas
Yo! Cole!
Sorry about the mis-communication. My '76 Camaro is my DD, and the Scosche is not for sale (AND this is not the forum for sales discussions). I meant only to provide you with a solution, and a link to a source. Good luck. Todd.
