Re: whats a posi sound like?

Mine sounds like totally worn out brake shoes on the drum (metal on metal). I don't know if it's a problem or not. Tires do chirp if I hit it just a little turning a corner.

sounds like you will be putting in some extra hours to pay for a rebuild. unless its a locker it should be silent

Re: whats a posi sound like?

It could be that the posi additive is worn out. It wears out over time & needs to be replaced. It's a lot cheaper than diving into a rearend rebuild that you might not need.

Re: whats a posi sound like?

If it is a stock type ( eaton I think ) they will have a set of clutches that can get glazed. Drain the rear end, and use a high quality 90w synthetic gear lube, and the GM positraction additive. I know that there are additives out there in the aftermarket, but GM's friction modifier is the best. After getting the truck back together find somewhere you can drive a very tight circle in one direction, and then in the other this will work the new fluids into the clutches in the rear end.

Re: whats a posi sound like?

Hopefully changing fluid and additive will help. That won`t un-glaze the clutches.A posi makes no noise.

Re: whats a posi sound like?

Dang....give us more info on the install. Sounds like they didn't get it back together the way it came out. Shouldn't have any sound with regular driving.

Re: whats a posi sound like?

the guy that rebuilt it for me said it was good up to 80 foot lbs on his torque wrench, also it only does it a little bit when i take a corner real sharp, and in the gravel both tires will spin like they should.

Re: whats a posi sound like?

+1 on the GM "limited slip" additive. Very important. Others brands have never worked for me on GM units. Without it, the rear will bind and pop or grind on turns.
