WTB - Shaft style radio

Hey all,

I'm looking for a two-shaft type AM/FM radio with a working cassette for my '73. I've tried a couple units but can't seem to find one with a working cassette player. I still have tapes!

Anyhow, if you have something affordable let me know...Stock or aftermarket.

Thanks

JC62

Re: WTB - Shaft style radio

JC, I still have an AM/FM cassette radio I bought for my '78 truck in 1991 from Crutchfield that is NIB. It's a two-shaft model designed to fit like factory. Let me know if you're interested.

Re: WTB - Shaft style radio

Hey Joe. I put a Cadillac stereo in my 87, just took a few mods to the face of the radio to get it to come out into my stock bezel far enough. Heres one...LINK

Serious? Actually, that would be cool! I don't have any 8-tracks, but that would be one heck of a conversation piece. What are you asking for it?

Re: WTB - Shaft style radio

My sister found the radio that was in my 87 originally. It's a tape deck, radio itself works, can't remember if I tried the tape deck or not. Truck had 87k on it and owned my an old man, other than being dusty in real good shape. If you want I can snap some pics on my cell for yah...

In my experiance, 99% of the time a cassette player does not work it is because the rubber drive belt has deteriorated and/or the pinch roller has become rock hard. It is usually not too hard open the player up and replace these parts. Most electronics stores have them or can order them for you, or you can find them online, if you know what sizes they are. I suggest replacing both and cleaning up the heads with some isopropal alcohol and maybe you can resurrect one of the decks you already have.

Honestly, almost any cassette player you are likely to find was probably manufactured at least 15-20 years ago. Even if it was never used, the belt has surely dry rotted. It may work for a short time, but would eventually break. And if the capstan/pinch roller is not in good working order you will get terrible wow/flutter and it may possibly eat your tapes.

One last caution, I would stay away from any auto-reversing tape deck. Yes it is more convenient to not have to take the tape out and flip it over, but the sound reproduction is usually not as good because you cannot adjust the head azimuth so that it is perfect for both directions. Also the reversing mechanism adds complexity and greater opportunity for something to fail.

That's some good info! Thanks! I've thought about opening one up and trying to fix. I've never done it before, but I think my brother has...Maybe I'll try it...

Re: WTB - Shaft style radio

Hey guys. I decided to open up the Pioneer I took out of the truck to see if it was fixable. The rubber band was good, and the tape was turning. I cleaned up the insides and wiggled some things around and it started playing. I'm going to put that one back in. Thanks to everyone for looking in your sheds and projects and sending pics. I appreciate it!
