Re: starter won't start
Shim? What`s that?Something`s wrong there. It should at least mesh up.Wouldn`t a shim put it farther away?I think shims are used when it`s too tight.

Re: starter won't start
Maybe it is the flywheel?
Stock ones dont usally need shims. Just bolt it up. The high torque mini's need a shim.cvr anyways

Re: starter won't start
Might be difference between the 153tooth and 168 tooth flywheel/flexplates. Make sure starter is correct one for your application. Also, make sure teeth on the flywheel/flexplate are not chewed off. Also be sure to use correct oem style knurled starter bolts. Might have to shim just the outer bolt to tilt starter closer to the flywheel/flexplate. You do that by cutting a shim in half. Good luck.

Re: starter won't start
is it making a noise when trying to start? Cannot tell you where to find this, but there is a way to use an 1/8th" welding rod, and removing the starter solenoid to manually engage the starter until you get the clearance correct. I would also look carefully at the teeth on the flywheel. Make sure the teeth do not look to be ground down at the peaks of the teeth. If it was making noise before the starter exchange, and you have now fixed it, it may take awhile before you hear a difference.

Re: starter won't start
I had the same issue I used a screw driver to pull the starter gear out to the flywheel yea it was a pain once I had an idea of what to do I add a ton of shim to the outside bolt to get it mesh correct but it turns like a top now....
my starter guy said that they some times plain the top of the the start to clean them up he said that mass rebuilders use a belt sander and some come out halfassed others are just jap spin offs that need the same thing he told me the best thing todo is to have your OEM one rebiult it only takes a day and IT WILL WORK |

Re: starter won't start
If its an automatic, check to make sure your flexplate isn't warped. The best way I've found to do this is to eye the distance between some point on the starter & the flexplate while turning it over by hand. I thought I had a shim issue. It turned out to be not that easy...
