Steering Wheel Year

Can anyone ID this steering wheel? I plan on using it on my 63 1/2 ton. I thought it was in the 69-72 year range ,ordered a horn cap and not close to fitting. Notice the rectangular area for the cap.

Re: Steering Wheel Year

I will say 73-79? not sure when they changed, but my 77 had that wheel with a woodgrain trim insert.

Ditto on what Ken said. My 77 Cheyenne is the same wheel with the trim insert.

Re: Steering Wheel Year

Yo! Here's a link to my research on this Type I wheel ('73-'87) and the Type II ('78-'87):
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...00#post3225400
Also info on horn caps and how-to reassemble the steering and horn parts.
It was available no where else, as far as I could find.
Todd.

Re: Steering Wheel Year

If you find one in a junk yard it is an easy clean up. The cap is metal so you can give it a quick clean up and a coat of semi gloss paint and it will look almost like new. That is what I did on my 77. I just masked off the bowtie emblem and painted the rest.

My '74 wheel is for a lack of better words melting/oozing and is sticky. Iv'e tried a couple of cleaning agents and they don't seem to change it. I'm almost to the point where I'm going to put a steering wheel cover over it. Anyone ever have such a thing happen to theirs?

I don't think that the cap is metal on this steering wheel..I think its more made out of the rubberized coating thats on the wheel itself.
