Has anyone Modified their OEM Door Locks?
Hello,
I have looked all over the internet and on this website for someone who has modified their OEM door lock system on a 67-72 Chevy truck. I hate the factory door lock system where you need to lock the door with the keys from the outside. Push on the door handle, etc..... I am looking for a standard solution where, someone can push the lock button down on open door. Then, shut the door, without having the door lock, push back up. Is there a way to modify the latch paw or cut something off? Will a newer 1973-80 latch paw work? I am guessing there isn't an easy solution, since I haven't seen any other solutions out there. I like the OEM door handle look and don't want to shave my door handles. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Adam |

I can't say as I have never looked into this. It may be possible to modify the latch but I would almost bet you would have to use the later latches. LockDoc

I myself like the fact that they lock the way they do. It's a little effort, but I have never locked my keys in my truck!

I have locked my keys in too many vehicles to try and bypass that great feature.

On a hilarious (now) side note I had to take my daughters spare keys to her one afternoon when she had stopped and got out of the car with it running and the automatic door locks locked the doors when she closed the door to keep the cold air in. Not many automotive related things more embarrassing than standing outside your car with it locked and running. |

Power door locks with a remote fixes it.

Re: Has anyone Modified their OEM Door Locks?
+1. Doing this on my truck now. Leaving the OEM setup alone and just adding the power locks. No remote. Just the ability to lock both doors when I lock/unlock the driver's door, either from inside or with a key. This seems like a good solution without disabling the OEM anti-lock-your-keys-in-the-truck-and-feel-like-an-idiot feature.

Buy a newer truck .I`ve driven these trucks for 36 years and it has never bothered me.

Re: Has anyone Modified their OEM Door Locks?
I agree with special-K. My first vehicle was a 69 GMC. It has never bugged me. I did the power locks on a truck that had an alarm and liked having the remote locks. I do it again. The not being able to lock from the outside without a key (or remote) I consider a good thing. I've never locked a set of keys in a 67-72 GM truck.

I'll go so far as to say I consider it a feature on the truck that you can't possibly lock your keys in. I never take off features - I just add them when possible.

Re: Has anyone Modified their OEM Door Locks?
I don't know for sure because I don't have doors on my 68 yet. Alot of cars years ago you just lock the lock and hold the outside door button in in while you shut the door.

Re: Has anyone Modified their OEM Door Locks?
I installed bear claw latches in my doors best thing I ever did. The factory latches to me suck. I still need to fine tune the body work.
