I have never had a 292 that I ever changed the oil in before, but today I drained the oil in my 1970 1ton (with the 292 ) and got almost 3 gallons of oil out!!!!

I put 5 quarts back in and it didn't even show on the dip stick? The book says it takes 5 quarts? I have put 8 quarts in and now it shows 1 qt low??? How many qt's does your 292 hold??? I am sure its the original motor, supposed to be a 55k mile original truck?? Any ideas?? Mabey the wrong dip stick?? Thanks, Joe

My 292 is happy with 5 quarts. Something does not sound right. wrong dipstick or an aftermarket oilpan? Can't be good to run with too much oil so better check it out.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think it should take that much oil? Probally the wrong dip stick.
