shock extension(hyperextension?)
hey gentlemen, i will start by saying i am not the one who put these shocks on..
im just the one paying the price (reffer to my build thread for all "repairs" that i have repaired...) so my fronts WERE dual shock, remobed brackets and brought it down to single shocks.. my spine was hurting perod.... everthing was like driving on brick suspension and bare rims... so now.. the ride was much smoother.. but my rear likes to "dance" alot.. too much.. so here i was installing new exhaust hangers and i have noticed my rear shocks seem to be fully extended at rest in the driveway. now this MIGHT be my fault due to me changing to 14bolts in the rear from a corp 10, but skyjacker diddnt list a different partnumber between the two k series trucks (unless im blind) so.. i am assuming i have the incorrect shock installed on the rear so the solution is? 1/ bring bolt holes down on the frame for my shock and "raise" the shock bracket on the axle... or buy longer shocks.. now.. my wife will freak if i dont describe this correctly to her.. and just go buy new parts off a whim what do you think i should do? moving both peices can gain me at least 4 inches (derived/assumed from basic measurements) i can weld (not frizzleFry style but like 4yr old fingerpaints) good and strong let me know what your input is.. what one would you do? and i do respect your opinions and professional input. thanks!

The only way to get the right shocks for your specific application is to unbolt your shock(one end will do)and drive thru a ditch or something that will fully extend and compress your suspension. With your axle fully compressed or drooped measure the distance between the upper and lower shock mounts, right this number down, change your position in the ditch so the axles are now compressed or drooped the other way, remeasure the distance. If you look in a shock catolog it will list all shock dimensions, fully compressed and extended. Find the dimensions that work on your truck and order. No more too long or too short shocks again! I would not trust the lengths they send you in your lift kit to be correct in any situation other than plain old street use.

You could disconnect one shock, use your handyman jack and raise the truck till the wheel is just off the ground via the frame or bumper (on the side you removed the shock from) measure that extended length from shock mount to shock mount. This is the maximum extended length (lets say 34"). Lower and remove the jack. Next measure from where the bump stop would touch the frame to the top of the bump stop add 1" to that number (for bumper compression) (lets say that number is 7"). Then measure from the top shock mount to the lower shock mount (lets say that number is 25") and subtract your bump stop to frame +1" number. The difference between two numbers ( 25"-7"=18") is the compressed shock length.
Look for a shock that will travel within those lengths (34" to 18"). If you can't find a shock that fits in between those two lengths either A: raise your bump stop until your compressed length gets into range or B: install a limiting strap that reduces your maximum extended length to within range or C: ask yourself what kind of off-roading your going to do (will your ever have one wheel off the ground?) and select a length that is a happy medium for your needs.

i turned down buying new shocs today because skyjacer had lengths labeled off the lift itself.. so i diddnt bother... thans for the input guys this will be a "new future" project for me..
