Question on tranny swap.....

I am making a freak 4WD. It's a 1991 burb with a 1997 Vortec and I'm planning on putting in a 1997 4l80e tranny. However my question is the tail housing for the transfer case. Will the transfer case from the 700r4 mount on the 4l80e?

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

I may be wrong, but I believe they are the same.I believe the NP208 from behind the 700r4 and TH400s are the same configuration as the NP241 that would be behind a 4L80E.I take it your Suburban is a 1500.I believe once the mating pattern went to round on the transfer case everything is the same, including later NP205s.Someone correct me if I`m wrong.I`d like to be sure, too.

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

When I straight axled the 99 I mated a NP205 from a TH400 up to the 4L80E and had to cut about an inch off of the tail shaft of the 4L80E to make it work

Hey Ghetto-

you put a solid axle on a 99? Oh do tell....it sounds difficult!!!!...smart.....but difficult....as a matter of fact I have recently joined the "IFS SUCKS" bandwagon too. And did you take a inch off so you didn't have to have your drive shaft redone? To me that would be easier.

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

The transfer case from a 700r4 uses a 27 spline input and the 4l80e uses a 32 spline input transfer case and they both use the same bolt pattern.

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

is there a way for me to swap in a 32 input spline? Or do I need to find a transfer case from a 3/4 ton?

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

In order to use the NP205 the shaft had to be cut, so that a custom one didn't have to be made. The solid axle swap is a simple swap. You use a front axle out of the 73-87 with the leaf springs and front shackles. Weld the front shackles to the frame once the tire is centered in the wheel well. Then for the rear shackles use the hangers and shackles from the rear end of the 73-87 and flip them around so that the hanger sits flat agianst the inside of the frame rail and weld it in place this will put your spring width at exactly the right location.

Re: Question on tranny swap.....

Hey Ghetto-

any pics of the finished product? And what did you do to your transfer case setup? Is it still on the fly? If so did you just flip it over to the passenger side?

No it's on the floor I used the NP205. I will get pics for you, this also works on the 88-98.
