House paint is nowhere near as damaging, nor is there a fire issue with house paint.

Have you ever thought of water bourne Paints and Primers....Sealers....Just as good if not better than ANY solvent paints. No way could say anything about that....Its what the EPA wanted.....Now this does not help clearing ...But none the less....It would save on alot of hassle......Luckily I live in a rural area..So I dont have any of these issues...And I have fixed both my neighbors cars in the past...So I feel I Am good...(for now)......

I had a 1988 Olds Delta 88 that I believe was painted with water based paint from the factory and it was crap, clear coat turned white and flaked off. Had my 71 Mustang painted with solvent based Dulux and man that stuck to the car like glue. I used PPG base clear on my Camaro and it is good stuff but very toxic and deadly, had to wear a respirator, has isocyantes in it I think. Maybe water based paints are better now but I am suspicious of them.

I think water base have come a long way. Ithink after my truck is done I will give water base a shot.

i doubt you have water based paint from 1988. They were still using laquor on a few cars back then. Laquor and Enamel was all there was.
While water based would be better, the fact is, it is still illegal to spray in your garage in pretty much any place in the US.

My dad told me it was water based and it was something GM was just introducing or experimenting with. He could've been wrong, though, he's no expert on car paint. However, I do remember we got a recall notice in the mail from GM but it was for a credit toward a new GM car, or an offer to pay for 50% of a entire repaint. We skipped it since 50% of a dealer sprayed paint job would have still cost a small fortune. Donated the car out years later after I drove the crap out of it.

I agree with Bad, and also think that water base will be ALL you can get within 5 to 10 years. Other than different equipment it sprays good, from what I remember. (Been a few years.) But solvent based paint is slowly being phased out, look how hard it is to just buy the stuff (and how expensive) unless you have a legitimate business. I don't have a business now, but I did, and thank God that still carries weight at NAPA. But this is Maine, I feel for all the do-it-yourselfers elsewhere. If you are being scrutinized, write letters, make them prove it is a hazaard, make them spell out what constitutes a hazaard. Compared to real air polutants from large businesses home painting is NOT a threat, when doing a few cars per year. And I thought this was a free country???!!! We all need to stick together! But unless you are being watched, I wouldn't raise any eyebrows, just be smart.

It's funny you mention those. I am in Sacramento for business this week, and when we were heading over to the mall area, I saw them working on one of the cameras. I agree with you, the automated revenue generators are annoying.

Quite honostly for what the visit was for,,,don't push the issue. I know of a couple people that were fined 10,000 for doing the same thing. Your probably right about the neighbor.


I ussually wait until 2am if I'm gonna spray but even doing it then is not a great idea. A neighbor calls PD in the middle of the night and you still have issues. The PD will contact fire and Code Enforcement in the morning.


Where spraying without a booth is concerned,,,,,it's at your own risk. As Andy has said it is dangerous and extremely unhealthy even with a booth.

There is a body shop down on 85/87 that used to rent their booth for 200.00 a day.. It's Bob's auto body. Check with a few other shops, I have heard of others doing it also.

I realize its my bad for doing what I am doing out here. I know this is a wake up call, as I have been doing this here for quite a while, I am ready to not do this any more as age and other factors come in play, but I am so close to finish this project, just makes me uneasy and a little irratable that someone turned me in.

My paint booth. I have a portbible a/c in a paint booth. Fans placed outside and pulling air out through the vents with 2 fans on the roof. When door is closed all you hear is an aircompressor. Just done sparaying some etching primer.

I used a rented spray booth to spray my Camaro. It was a horrible booth, bad filters, crappy seals and dirty as hell but I did not want the code enforcement Nazis to get me. Use a paint that you can color sand and buff out and you can get most of the dirt out of it afterward.

Neighbors that won't come and talk to you when they have a problem are the reason there are so many neighborhood fueds. I can personally see both sides but I also think it could of been handled by a neighbor to neighbor talk instead of calling code enforcement.

Its funny here where I live. My neighbor was doing body work out of his garage for years. A church finally complained. We don't have a homowners assoc. just the local code enforcers.
They sent him a letter but it did not state he cannot do body work or a business out of his house. It just stated:

No noise,fumes,dust,extreme light,particles,fragments,dirt,radiation,(and a long list of items that pretty much covered all work) can be emitted from the garage. They were thorough.And said he would be fined if not compliance. They did not say he could not run a business you just can't do anything

Actually water based paint still has solvents in them. They are called Co-solvents. All water base still have them. They are trying to get rid of them but have not yet completely . I used to work for BASF corp.

I do support that DYI's stick together. We help to fight that in the groups we belong to. Look what they are doing to CO2 . its something humans need.
