Steering Damper
Hi,
Has anyone had trouble with the length of a stock steering damper? It's on a 77 4x4 burb. It's a GM part. I rebuilt the whole front end and replaced the damper and tossed the old one-it was all dented up. Went to roll the thing into the spray booth for paint and was unable to turn the wheels full to the left. Turning to the right was okay. It's like the damper stroke isn't long enough. I thought they wee all the same length from 73-91. Thanks, Tom |

The first thing I would do is disconnect it and make sure that the dampener shock really is the limiting factor.
If it isn't, then you have to look at the parts you changed. "Assuming" that we are talking about a replacement shock going into the factory mounting locations....The axle housing side can't move, so....you have one of two things. The shock itself is "wrong", meaning that simply replacing it will cure your problem. Or you have a tie-rod with the hole in the wrong location? Do you still have the old one to compare it to? It is more likely that the shock is wrong, but it could be the wrong tie rod too...
