Question Help I ruined the OUTER GRILLE SHELL on my 72 How can I bring the shine back?

Over the weekend I decided to clean my outer GRILLE SHELL and I used Steel Wool to remove over spary from a privious paint job thinking it would clean it up a bit. I thought nothing of it so I went over most of the entire grille, till after I washed it I dried it up and thought the soap had stained it but I think I ruined my GRILLE it looks fogged, hazzed like soap scum. Can anyone help me with a salution to fixing it myself inexpensively polishing products? I can not afford $299.00- $399.00 plus shipping for a new or REPRO one. any suggestions would be great thanks Pablo.....

sounds like the original anodizing is still on the grill what you need to do is sand it down start with 200grit followed by 400 than 1000 after doing that and getting a nice even finish it's time to compound then polish it// labor intensive but cheap to do

Agreed, should keep sanding with proper grits and then start polishing.

I guess you could also paint it a silver color.

I'm not sure what the cost would be, but you might contact any local powder coating companies and see what the would charge to strip it, polish it and then clear it.

Or as was stated above break out the elbow grease and start sanding accordingly,,,,,,,

What about oven cleaner to get the anodizing off and then just polish? I've heard that works, never tried it though.

The only thing I can think of is use Simichrome polish and a whole lot of elbow grease.

An easy way to get the original anodizing off is to use Easy-Off oven cleaner. Spray on, let soak for a little bit and when the anodizing starts coming off, wipe it down and wash it off.

After all of it is off, you can polish it up. Used to do this on motorcycle frames, to remove the anodizing off so you can polish up the frame.

x 2. I did this on one of my trucks as well. After easy off, use sandpaper method as cdowns described. i used a dremel tool and a lot of polishing pads to polish/buff it out.
