Question 2 spd Power glide ????????

I have a 70 c10 with a 2 spd powerglide, were these good transmissions, can I pull a car trailer with it. Please give me some general information about this type of transmission.

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of Powerglides, but I think it is a good auto to use for dragging, since it has only 2 speeds.

Most powerglides that came in v-8s had a high first gear making leaving stops hard when pulling. My 68 had the pg with 3.73 and was sluggish. Now maybe because it had 175,000 without an overhaul may have made a difference. From mt old chevy guy he said that 6 cyl pg's had a lower first gear.

First off, I had to respond to someone since this is post #500!!!
Now, as for the powerglide. I feel its a strong tranny as I had one in my 65 Corvette back in high school and it took all the abuse I could give it. At 16 there was alot of abuse!

I have had three cars with powerglides . My truck now was used as a tow vehical before i got it. They said it did a good job. but rember this a t350 or t400 will give better gas mialage

I've never had one in a truck, but they are bullet proof! I once threw one into reverse by mistake at about 40+mph, and it didn't even phase it! Wheels locked up, and engine died, but I just started it right up, and took off again! Try that with any other auto! I'm not sure about pulling as they were originally intended for cars, but Impalas are heavy cars so who knows. The only disadvantage is not having that extra gear at highway speeds.

My 67 has a powerglide with a 6 cyl and a 3.73 rear gear (so it says in the glove box )

They are good transmissions
Not sure about towing with one though. I have never done that.

My 68 has the powerglide and I have pulled our 23 foot travel trailer with it. The truck also had a setup for a 5th wheel in the box when I got it so I assume it had done its share of towing before I got it. Never had any trouble with the transmission.
Like all automatics, it is a good idea to put in a good transmission cooler if you are going to work the transmission hard. Heat is the enemy where automatics are concerned.

I use mine for pulling my boat.
The powerglide is super for getting the boat out of the water on a slick ramp.
The only problem I have had towing is getting up to speed quickly like on freeway entrance ramps.
In my opinion the combination of the coil spring (trailing arm) rear end and the powerglide transmission with a V/8 engine make a great combination for a tow vehicle.

I had a trans that can do that........'84 G2500 GMC van with th325, supposedly a short shaft version of the th400. Was toolin down the interstate doing 75, talkin to friends in the back using way too much of my hands, hit the gear shift into reverse. Yow!!!!!

Left 2 black marks onthe highway approx. 15-20 yrds long before I put back in drive and kept going! Finally pulled over 20 miles later. I had to look underneath. Everything was ok and is still runnin to this day. That was 8-9 years ago.

Don't try this at home!
