WTF 71 chop
This all started as something I just couldn't pass up. A 71 cab that had been chopped about 4" in the 80's. And now in bad shape with lots of rust in the floors. And the right kind of price. So here we go, I couldn'ty possibily screw this up right?
The cab came with a front clip. So I found a frame, some bed sides. First I channelled the cab around the frame. Then installed drop sindles with 3"/5" drop springs. Its close to my goal of 4" off the ground. In the pics, Its 5.5". But thats with no doors, front clip and bed sides. And goofy truck tires. I think it will be lower. This build is supposed to be a budget build. I want to do everything myself. I want it to look as old school as i can. Always wanted to try a old custom. Cut something up and put it back together.

Well,
Thats low alright. Will be interested in seeing you seat setup, and leg room might be an issue, unless your an amputee like me. So, whats next? I figured its a free bee so far, or cheap enough. I got a rust bucket cab, i plan on cutting up too. Bill |

Re: WTF 71 chop
Lot of work on the drip rails. They're alot more work there than I thought. Also need to finish the driver side floor. Mount the bed sides. mock up front clip, Im sure the rad support will need some creative cutting also. Just trying to get it mocked up so I can break it back down. Alot of slow work. But fun.

Re: WTF 71 chop
What are your plans for a windshield? I'd say that's gonna be your BIGGEST challenge. I see a lot of rat rod guys do chops without thinking about what to do with the windshield, then when they find out what a job it is, they sell their unfinished project.

Re: WTF 71 chop
Are you going to leave it a longbed or chop it down to a shorty?

Re: WTF 71 chop
63&64, I already have a windshield for it, And its already for sale. I enjoy the metal work and mock up. I would like to sell it as a roller and let someone else finish it how ever they like.
67 redneck, It is going to be a long bed, long and low. Thats the plan.

Re: WTF 71 chop
A little bit of progress on the drip rails, and mock up with doors and front clip. Drips went pretty smooth fom about 3-4 inches away from a pillar. and into the middle top windshield. a little more work around the pillars.

NOt ssure what to do about that, Going to be really tight on space right there. Could drop the frame horns or lay the radiator back like a corvette. Havent put to much into it yet. But thats what make this stuff fun is the challenge.
