Authenticity question?
Ok so here's the deal, i'm taking a truck that started it's life as a custom 10 long bed truck that I had at one time converted to a 2wd SWB Cheyenne truck. Now ten years later, I am building a 4x4 SWB truck using a factory 4x4 chassis that I will be setting my cab, actual shortbed that has not been cut down, and everything else from my original truck. Here's the question, I am going to change colors, but other than that I am going to make a 4x4 Custom 10 truck out of these parts. I plan on using an aftermarket SPID label and was wondering if it is ethical or even legal to label this truck as a 115 WB custom 10 4x4? I never plan on selling this truck, and if I did I would be adamant to the buyer that it is not original. I know Camaro owners build Yenko and SS clones everyday and try to pass them off as original and I am definitely not trying to pass this truck off as factory and am only making this label for my own benefit. SO is this something that would be considered cool, or no?

i plan on doing something close except my VIN will be correct and match the frame numbers, i'll be adding the options i've installed but like you said, i always tell people that the "goodies" are added, it did not come from the factory equipped like that. as long as you disclose the facts i really don't see a problem. i'm not sure about the "legal" side of it though since you are taking a 2wd body and swapping it to a 4wd chassis. sounds like a nice project. i'm considering swapping my 72 suburban onto a 4wd chassis at some point and i'll have to check with calif. DMV at that time for any legality issues.

People do that all the time in the northeast. Got a truck with no body left, found a clean truck but it's 2wd, swap the bodies and be done. Up here they don't check anything else but the VIN, and as long as it matches the registration, they leave it at that. Stuff up here rusted so bad, there is no way to read the VIN on the frame. I never knew there was one till someone told me about it. Same with the door tag. Doors don't last very long, but now and then you can find a clean one in a junkyard, and who is gonna swap the tags over??? It's only a door?? If a cop wants to be a jerk, he probly could right you a ticket, but would get thrown out in court.
If not I'll find out. I'm taking a 2wd 89 crew cab dually and turning it into a 4wd crew cab SWR. But not swapping the body/frame, so maybe they will be oblivious.....

If the frame is a short bed then it is a legal short bed anyway. I don't think the VIN mentions wheelbase anyway. As stated, disclosure is everything in the legal world anyway. Tell people what it is if they are buying it and do what you want with your truck, sounds like it will turn out nice in the end...

Yeah, disclosure is always best. I looked at a shortwide one time a guy was passing off as a real shortwide cheyenne super, truck had been cut down bed had been cut down, and looking at the V.I.N. it wasnt even a V8 truck

My 4x4 started life as a 2wd 82 Silverado with a 305, just flipped the cab onto a 4x4 chassis added a 3 inch body and a big block and she was good 2 go. Dont tell my insurance guy. lol

Go for it.The only thing wrondg about it would be selling it as original w/o disclosing what it really is.But,yyou`ll never get away with that.We know and we`ll tell on you .I`m sure a buyer would be pleased to own a truck that was done to appear correct over an obviously altered truck.I know..I know...you`ll never sell it.Never say never.
