Control arm/Spindle clearance issues

As I torqued my upper ball joints, it drew the top of the spindle into contact with the upper control arms:

What have I got wrong? Or does the engine and body weight change the angle of the dangle enough for everything to clear? It is just bare frame right now.

Thanks.

Is there a boot on there? and the taper might be the wrong one on the ball joint or the spindle you might want to look into that check the other side to see if its the same. also if there is no load on the suspension and its hanging free it will be fully extended and will not be in its proper ride height.

Since it is at full droop, that is as close as it's ever going to get.....and some space will open up when there is weight applied to the frame. But, I still wouldn't leave it that way. Take it back apart and grind away some of the lip from the upper control arm, so that it clears at every place in the rotation of the steering.

Dang it. That's kinda what I figured I'd have to do. Is this a common problem? Grind it off the control arm, then? I would have guessed the spindle.

Oh well. What's one more time taking this back apart. Third time's the charm, right?

Better to have it right.

Thanks, guys

Re: Control arm/Spindle clearance issues

you can take some off the spindle also, may not even have to take everything back apart. Just put a jack under the lower control arm as near the ball joint as possible and raise it til the wheel comes off the ground. you may have to take the brake caliper, rotor, and dust shield off but maybe thats all. you may be able to get a die grinder in there without removing anything. Its worth a try.

Re: Control arm/Spindle clearance issues

I assume you have the correct ball joint for your spindle?
