Road trip, summer '09

Okay, so this trip and it's pics isn't near as cool as our trip to Bonneville last year, but at least we got out in an old truck somewhere this year.

Brett (dirtball) and I have been talking for a while about making a trip to Julesburg Colorado to take in a drag race. Julesburg raceway is supposedly the oldest operating strip in the country, so we wanted to check it out before it ended up closing like all the old timers do. Julesburg is in the very northeastern part of the state, a little over 300 miles round trip. We left Saturday afternoon, spent the night in Holyoke, and headed to Julesburg in the morning, and back home late afternoon Sunday.

Northeastern Colorado is very wide open, towns are very small and far apart. See, nothing around-

Brett taking a turn at the wheel-

The town of Holyoke, small but very clean. I hadn't been this far into the corner of the state, and I was pleasantly surprised how clean the towns were this far out compared to the towns west of Sterling-

The old girl in the parking lot of the Golden Stains, I mean Golden Plains Motel, Holyoke, Colorado.

Next morning, coming into Julesburg-

Re: Road trip, summer '09

Looks like some good stuff, but they where closed-

The strip was small and very low buck, but that's what made it so cool-

There were about 40 or 50 cars racing. I used to have a GN so that should explain this pic-

Cool storm north of us on the way home-

This is a pretty common site in eastern Colorado, lots of abandoned buildings-

Yep, we were definitely out east -

Looks like grasshopper country.Every road out there looks like a drag strip, just more than a 1/4 mlie. So,it`s still an airport, too?Do you have any idea when it opened?i hate seeing old tracks go down. They truly are a part of American history.
thanks for sharing the experience. You didn`t mention what your best time was.

Awesome bug collection. Nice truck, and the small town pix bring back memories for northern Michigan.

Was Julesburg far enough east that you couldn`t see the Rockies?i can`t recall how far back you can start seeing them. But,what a sight after rolling the plains mile after mile.

Thanks, I'm always amazed how many people with old vehicles either just don't want to, or find any excuse they can to not get out on the road in their rig and I don't understand it. Hopefully some of these trip threads on here inspire someone to hit the road, they don't know what they're missing!

The track opened in '58, so last year was it's 50th. You cannot see the Rockies from that far east, next time I'm out east I'll have to pay attention when they disappear.

I even had dead grasshoppers under my hood up by the hood hinges!

Wow Chris...that's a cool story and a neat trip. I used to work at Bandimere speedway back when it looked like that one.....Just Mr. Bandimere's little dragstrip. Too many great things like Mom and Pop dragstrips and drive in movies have gone away...

Sad, isn't it? I was glad to see this one still seemed like you were stepping back in time. One a positive note there is an older looking drive-in in Sterling that looks like it's still operating.
