what is this hole?

i am about to fire up the motor for the first time and was under the truck checking everything out. I came across a hole under the fuel pump housing on the block. Does this hole need to be plugged? Or does it serve a purpose?
I posted a picture of the motor when it was out of the truck. Sorry for the poor picture, but i know you guys will have an answer for this one. Thanks

Re: what is this hole?

What year block is that?

If yer stickin it in a 67/72 then I'd just plug it with a allen bolt.

Honestly, I have no idea...

Re: what is this hole?

theres a flat metal plate that mounts on there and the fuel pump mounts to the plate// service manuals have clear illustrations ,pictures and instructions how to do the job correctly

Re: what is this hole?

If it goes into the engine and is not plugged you will oil everywhere, I assume. Looks like it needs a plug pressed into the hole.

Re: what is this hole?

Is it there so you can insert a screwdriver or other tool into the hole to help align the fuel pump push rod while installing the fuel pump?

Re: what is this hole?

Is it all the way thru ?? If not don't worry about it. It was probably machined or cast in there for a sensor or some kind of jig they have at the factory.

Re: what is this hole?

Yeah I went out and looked at a couple of blocks I have. They have the same hole. Nothing but road grime in them. I'd say like I said before, at the factory there mass producing these blocks, so they have that hole there for putting it in a jig for machining after it has been cast. If you'll notice there ones at the back also, All the Small blocks I've messed with have those same holes. So the jig idea makes the most since to me.

Re: what is this hole?

Thanks Barry! I had an old 305 sitting in the garage and it too has the same hole. Didn't notice it at first lots of grease and grime. Thanks so much for checking into that for me I appreciate it....Rick

Re: what is this hole?

The hole is used only in manufacturing. One of the first machined in the block and used to index for further machine work.
