72 SWB Cheyenne I saw today

I love coming across these trucks like this......SO I was cruisin' out in the country today and came across this bedless 72 SWB Cheyenne sitting next to the shed (This is ultimately what I would like as my next DD and rolling resto project)...it looked so lonely.....I knocked on the owners door and asked if he minded me looking at his truck...he said sure, and then he asked did I know it was for sale??....Ummmm no signs in the window, but I did have a inclination that it was....He couldn't fire it up b/c the battery was dead and said that the frame had been undercoated b/c it was bedless and he didn't want it to rust....He did have a bed for it in the shed, but it was missing the passenger side and it was primed.....I pulled back the carpet at the kick panels best i could....they looked really solid, and never been replaced (BUT wait....look at the last set of pics)

so before I tell you what he wanted for it.....what do you think it's worth (WIW)??

Re: 72 SWB Cheyenne I saw today

And now the underside....all 4 floor supports were shot (are they easy repairs??)....Not sure what the PO was trying to do, but they put some kinda tar or something inside the rusted out supports (I guess to keep water away).....Looked down from the inside passenger corner and saw daylight...yikes!!!...

okay...your turn...WIW??....I reveal the price soon!

Re: 72 SWB Cheyenne I saw today

It is a short fleet side but it will be lots of work. The cab looks shot. If it were only the cab corners, rockers and some of the floor...no big deal. But it also looks like the drip rails and cowl are bad too. The one pic shows some rust in the driver side upper cowl/firewall area. This is a bad sign...especially if on both sides. Inspect above the windshield and rear window for rust as well. Just alot of work!!!! Best to pull the cab and find a new one if it has all those areas to fix. How bad is the bed? Need pics.

Owner probalby thinks it is worth $3500. Out here most would only pay about $2000-$2500 ONLY because it is a short fleet. If it was a long fleet he would be lucky to get $500-$750.

The floors really didn't look too bad when I pulled back the carpet, BUT when I looked underneath, I screamed inside!!!.....
Definitely rusty along the drip rails though....and I couldn't pull the weather striping back on the windshield and rear window due to the trim....but it worried me too.....I only got a could pics of the bed...it was tucked in the shed and had personal items in it that I didn't want to touch....(see below)

As for the price.....he wants $2700 for it....I thanked him for his time and let him know I appreciate him letting me take a looky....

I knew it was too good to be true, but I tought maybe I would have beginners luck!!!

the search conintues...I'll keep me head on a swivel looking in all yards and barns as I continue on my country road drive-bys!!!!

Re: 72 SWB Cheyenne I saw today

Geoff I disagree with the others that truck is not in bad shape. The cab corners are not rotten, nor do the rockers look to be bad, door bottoms are ok but the cab supports need replaced. The rest of the floor looks good and around this area where salt is used it is in prety good shape. The drip rails can be fixed as it looks like the paint is peeling, and it also looks like the truck has been epainted as the color is not medium olive so who knows what is hiding, if you can get it for 2000 or less it would not be a bad truck to restore imo.

Where was this one located at? I am working on my 71 and would like to take a look at it to get pictures of some of the areas that the PO of mine has screwed up or left parts missing.

I think its a pretty good deal. You could put a little money in it and make a driver out of it. It don't have to be a full restoration to have fun in it. It looks pretty good shape for this area. Get it running good, lower it and have fun for under 5k. After a year or two, re-sell and find a nicer one. Just my opinion of course.

Re: 72 SWB Cheyenne I saw today

Guys have started with much worse. I am amazed what some guys start with. A lot depends on just how much money and work you can do or put into it having it done. At first glance the truck looks good. I can see how it caught your attention. You can assume he couldn't start it because it won't run. If it had a strong engine in it he would surely have used that as a selling point. So engine and trans are another expense most likely just to get it rolling. Then there are the brakes and cooling system, exhaust,etc...it's adding up fast. Clear title? It's looking more like a $12 to $1500 truck to me.

Thanks Harold....He has come off his initial price, but I may just let this one go.....

It's in Taylorsville....just north of Statesville, NC....maybe post up a question on the board for some pics...maybe easier than ridin all that way to take pics....unless of course you're gonna buy it...

Good advice, but I think I'll continue my quest!

Boog....I think I'm with you on that price....definitely a $1500 truck in my mind, but not sure he'll go that low....I'm really ready for a turn-key ride with a little rollin resto to add to the fun...this may be a little too much work for me right now!!!

Here's a better deal IMO: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ant...317823628.html

He is in the Calif desert out in rust free BFE. I'll bet he'd take 2K or less for it. Drop in a driveline and go.

You see,you have to add $1,000+ to that price to get it back east.We have to ask if it`s worth $3,500.I always say yes. But,to find something you can work with back here you save the transport cost.
This truck is an a/c swb Cheyenne. That makes it worth close to double a Custom/10 swb with no air in same condition. This truck may not be as good as it appears in pictures.Definately gone over once a while back.it has a Cheyenne Super seat cover and the color is changed.i`d still goo $1,000 because at the end of a resto it`s only another $1,000.You could be given that truck and it could still cost ya $15,000.So,$16,000-$17,000 doesn`t sound much worse. You have to get your hands on an a/c Cheyenne shortbed to start with. You could buy a decent looking $5-6,000 re-painted truck and still put the same amount of money on top of it.That`s how I look at it.It`s a cheap way into a Cheyenne swb with a/c.

It is still cheaper to ship a vehicle back east than fix rust issues. That guy will probably take $1500 for the truck, add $1000 for shipping = $2500. You never know the true condition until you go look at it...but a truck in the 100+ degree heat stands a good chance of having little rust. Add a few badges and you have a Cheyenne.

I agree here. My 71 is in rougher shape in some areas (door bottoms, rockers, around windshield, floor near kicks) and a little better in some (cab mounts and most of the underside). I bought mine for 1,500, but its Fleet.

I say it's not a bad bet but obviously bargain a good deal.

I haaaaate rust. Worth $1,500 to me or less. Unless you can weld and love fixing rusty panels, move on. That cab is a nightmare IMO. I'd rather replace rockers and cab conrenrs than deal with rusty drip rails, window channels and floor supports.
