AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
I just noticed that the title on my 1950 GMC 250 has the 228 engine number for a ID number B228******* . The only problem is that the 228 was replaced by a 235 chevy years ago. This is going to be a problem when I go to register it in Oregon. Is that number located any place on the frame ? Why would they use that number and not the one on the cab door frame ?
You would think that someone would have figured out at the DMV that a motor would one day need to be replaced ! |

Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
I just went out and looked at the bare GMC AD frame I have and I can find no numbers stamped in it anywhere that I can see.
I'm not sure what the procedure is to change the title in Oregon as to if you have to have the truck inspected or not. |

Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
Thanks for doing that for me ! I have heard that this is a problem in certain states. I guess I am at the mercy of those "smart" people down at the local DMV again !

Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
I dug this out online.
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/vehicle/titlereg.shtml It looks like you will end up going and having the vin inspected if it is an out of state title. Maybe someone with a totally stock AD GMC can enlighten us on what is used as the truck's VIN and if They are in Oregon so much the better. I'll say this, find out who is one of the oldest inspectors at the local inspection station and see if you can get that person to do the inspection as they tend to have a better handle on what's what than some of the younger guys who are great on the new stuff but may not know the old stuff that well. Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a related question.
This is my first build, I'm putting a V8 in an AD truck. What steps, in general, should I take to maintain a clean title (I know this varies from state to state)? What is the correct way to search around for info about this at the DMV (Restoration, custom, etc)? I'm in AZ, if anybody has any personal experience, I'd love to hear from you! |

Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
i started buy talking to a police officer (my younger bro) and asked what the procedure was. he gave me a form to fill out, ran a vin search, and now I am ready for the DMV. hopefully there wont be any surprises when i get there.

Re: AD vin / SERIAL - engine #'s
I spoke to the original owners son, he is in is 80's was a farmer is whole life, told me he would go to DMV with me and verify the change of #'s on the engine. I hope it works, will try to get the model # and sequence # used as the ID # on the new title. Will keep you posted. Would also look at the serial # on a title in the future before you get going to far on a project.
