Primer or Seam Sealer First - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Removing paint with 80 grit sand paper and plastic paint remover attached to high speed. When I get ready to shoot primer do I seam seal the cab top before or after the primer? What is your experience and did it work okay? Thank you in advance.

Prime first,seal,and prime.

What I have always done and it has worked out really well for me and others is do all your body work so you are ready for paint then do your seam sealer and spray your paint. You want the surface prepped the same for sealer as you do for paint. But also keep in mind anything is better now a days then what the factory had be then!

I agree... We did mine in the paint booth just before spraying it.

It's almost like caulking before you paint a house... It's applied just before you paint. The way we applied mine is similar to caulking a house - Apply a bead and smooth it out with your finger. Instead of water on your finger, use some reducer and have plenty of rags handy to wipe of the excess. It's a little hard on the fingers but worth it if you want a nice smooth bead.

Just make sure it`s cured before painting.i`ve seem paint crack when coated too soon.but,the main thing is you shouldn`t apply ahead of priming.I use high-build primer,sand,then shoot tech primer.I usually seal between primers.

Our you can do it like the factory and just slop it on then wipe the excess in an area no will ever see for a while

I'm still removing the paint, never realized how difficult and tedious the job really is but I got all the sealer off the roof drip edge. I was real lucky very little rust. Learning to be real patient.

Paint always seems to not want to come off unless its rusty paint... Btw I always seal everything 1st them move on from there...

I thimk i,am gonna put some epoxy paint on my drip rail before i put the seam sealer on. I used a coarse wire brush in my die grinder to clean everything up.

What do you use as a seam sealer? I mean is it a specific product or something I can pick up at the hardware store. I ask cause I'm gettin' ready to clean up the drip rails on my truck and hadn't realized there was even such a thing as seam sealer.

Go to your local body shop supply store - 3M has a couple of products that will work good.

Thats what we do. sand blast then Epoxy then sealer

I just sand blasted mine then epoxy primer. The seam sealer will go on next then the paint.

Dont use nothing but 3m seam sealer cauz its the best made. It costs twice as much too. Like 18-22 bucks a tube

Use nothing but 3m 8307 automix...I used a couple products beforehand and found myself redoing it twice before finally getting this product...One tube and gun rental from my local bodyshop ran $45 and the finish is stellar...I learned my lesson so you don't have to!

Vertical sections will be bumpy and need a good bit of sanding but he horizontal areas are dead level and flawless...
