trying to keep it on the road

I have an 84 swb 4x4 with 6" lift it has a lifted steering arm but not the pitman arm. I cant hardly keep it on the road sometimes it pulls side to side. it was toes out but i pulled that in and it helped but didnt fix it. i have 33x15.5x15 tires could that be the reason or do i need to change something? i was told to drop the sway bar and take the shims out from under the perches. any ideas?

6" lift will either require a steering arm (plus the "block"), .. s shaped drag link and the knuckle block (Like it sounds like you have) you may consider a hi steer kit.. I hear the objective, if you continue to use the drag link you have now, is to keep it as level with the ground as possible??

I only have the u shaped steering arm that bolts to the knuckle that came with the lift. Where can i get info on different setups like the high steer

hey how much play is in your steering,
i know i NEED a steering arm.. but the majority of my "slop" was from my powersteering not being "tight" there is a locked adjuster nut on the ps itself you can adjust in to firm it all up again

not sure how much play i have but i will try to tighten that up and see if it helps

Have you checked the wheel bearing nuts. I've seen them come loose on quite a few trucks and that really makes the truck wobble going down the road. Just my .02

If it was mine, I would check:
Ball joints
tie rod ends
drag link ends
wheel bearings
steering box
steering box bolts
frame where the box mounts(cracks)
rag joint
Also, those 15.5" wide tires are a bear if the road has a groove worn in.
A steering stabilizer would help that.

Are you saying that on level smooth pavement it wanders, or when you go over bumps/dips? If it is the later, (which is probably the case) you really need crossover steering to correct. Any other slop in the system will be magnified by the bump steer.

Drag link should be parallel to the ground, but with that much lift you are going to feel it w/o a x-over setup.

The truck does fine on smooth flat pavement its when i hit a bump or get on a road that has grooves from the heavy semi's that it jerks left or right. it sounds like i need the cross over but i only take it in the sand or on the road there's not much rock around here and it doesnt see much mud so is it worth it? everything seems to be tight underneath. The sway bar bushings are a little wore out so that might make a little difference. i was told that if i lowered the sway bar that would help, any ideas on that? will the crossover steering correct the problem on the grooved road with the wide tires?
