how can you tell which part of the igintion switch is bad. on my 69 chevy sometimes the key switch will work sometimes not. when it dosent start sometimes it will click or wont do anything. it will start ever time you cross the starter off. i noticed that the key will not turn all the way (i think).it is hard to tell. anybody else had the this problem?

I haven't had that problem but I would replace the switch itself. I don't think the lock cylinder would be the problem. If you got another switch you could reuse your lock and key. You might try wiggling the connector on the back of the switch, under the dash. It may be loose. LockDoc

Re: switch problems
On kind of a side note..... I replaced my ignition switch, but I had to get a new lock cylinder because it would not release from the switch. Through time and frustration I ended up mutilating it.
Anyways I would definatly try the replacing ignition switch first.

Re: switch problems
Turn the key as far to the left as it will go. Insert a large paper clip (partly straightened out) into the hole and push the spring loaded pin in (you shouldn't have to push very hard) and turn the key a little more to the left. You will have to pull the paper clip out as you turn farther to the left or the cylinder will bind up on it. If the cylinder doesn't pop out wiggle it back and forth just a little. if you wiggle it back and forth too much it will re-lock.

Re: switch problems
BigGuy69, I have had that exact problem with the ignition switch on my '71. What happened is the battery side of the switch shorted out. Sometimes it would work fine, sometimes it would either click or do nothing when you turned the switch, and the real fun part was if you wiggled the key just right it would kill the truck. Made driving on bumpy roads interesting. Replacing the switch fixed it all.
