That's crazy, never seen that? It should be very easy to remove just find the key, right?

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
That is interesting! The idea of mileage fraud prevention sounds plausible.
If it meens something to ya, as in some weird gadget. Take it to a lock smith, and get it keyed. Then put it on the trinket shelf in the garage... I'm thinking a Dremel cutting wheel should be able to cut it off.

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
i've seen those on rental cars when i did fleet maintenance back in the early 80's. it was to prevent the rentor from undoing the cable and put a lot of miles on a rental without paying extra mileage. a friend that works for a major rental agency told me that all of their cars have gps and recorder data that tracks how fast and where the the vehicle is at the time and at all times for insurance liability and theft purposes. he said if they are brought back broke or broken during use, that the rental companies are going after the rentor, so if you rent beware.

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
Never seen that before, but I agree, it had to be for a rental type truck. I wasn't aware that these trucks were rented out.
I bet Lockdoc could undo it for you. |

That is actually an auto spare tire lock. It used a special lug nut that had a groove in it and the lock locked onto the nut. I have a couple of them. Will it slide off? If not you should be able to slide a screwdriver down inside and push the lock bolt back and slide it off. LockDoc

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
I haven't got it off yet, never messed with it anymore. There is one of these on the other end of the cable too, but its been disconnected. Lockdoc, I'll try the screw driver.
Thanks Randy

These were obviously modified and used as stated above. Good old American ingenuity at it's best... They can be picked if the lock bolt can't be pushed back. LockDoc

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
you might be able to slide a screwdriver down into the larger gap (left side of cable in pic) then pry against the nut/ring, then try to turn the whole thing. The lock would probably still be locked to the cable but you could get the cable off of the cluster....just a though, good luck!

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
I'd be willing to bet that device was put in place to keep a teenage son from taking the truck out for joy rides, and dad logged the mileage. (No experience whatsoever from disconnecting the speedometer from Mom's RX-7 when I was 16.)

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
I was thinking rental vehicle as well. Rental agreements in the past had significant charges for mileage. Likely a fraud-prevention device.

Re: What is this and how does it come off?
If you loosen the two screws holding the speedo to the back plate, is the hole big enough for the cable end to go through the tin? basically, remove the speedo out the front with the cable and remove the cable from the speedo. There was probably some kind of plug mounted underneath the speedo head to secure the lock from that side. Looks like a corvette spare tire lock.
