Wiw gmc v-6???

what is a good running GMC V-6 worth? I dunno if it is a 305 or a 351, how can you id which one it is?
It is in my bro-in-laws 60-61 school bus.
also I believe the GMC eyebrow hood on it is in good shape also, I will have to get pics this next weekend unless i can find some in the archives, roughly what are these hoods be?

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

check the inside of the glovebox door, my big 61 had engine info there.
also check out www.6066gmcguy.org/ there should be a way to find engine info there.

the hood will work on a 1/2 ton. and the grille will work, but the mounting brackets will have to be changed out.

I think the dashes on the school bus were a carryover from the 47-54,at least on the chevy they were.

not much other salvage unless you find someone that needs a big truck front clip or parts.

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

Sorry Jon,
i should have been more specific, I assumed everyone had seen the pics I posted of it...it is not a big school bus, it is a 3/4-1 ton long panel truck with school bus seats and windows, it has the regular pick-up front clip. My bro-in-law is planning on changing the hood to a 62-66 style and putting a v-8 auto in it. I told him we could probably sell the hood and the engine/trans out of it to help fund the project.

Thats so rare it just ain't funny, those body styles were produced by a company that made the school buses for real small rural areas. I think Jolly has link built in his site for some styles. If you could possible keep and restore it like it, you'll have a jewel.

Jake

I have looked on there and don't see any info about the converted buses.....
you wouldn't happen to have a link would you. There doesn't seem to be much info out there about the 10.5 foot panel trucks either.
He is planning on fixing this thing up for the ultimate hunting/fishing and family-hauler

See? I knew it!

BTW: Is it true these motors have different sized pistons in the same engine?

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

To figure out what motor it is look on the passenger side of the block just in front of the cylinder head and it should have the engine ID on it.

you mean like number 1-3-5 cylinders have piston diameter of X and 2-4-6 hae piston diameter of Y?
Don't think so...Jolly's website says all the 305's have a 4.25 bore and 3.58 stroke

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

The 305 has smooth exhaust manifolds, where the 351 has ridges cast on them-called I-beam manifolds.
The pad should say 305-or 351.
I have a 71 351-C

No the pistons are equal in size and I believe they are actually the same one's that came in the 454.

Old custom classic trucks have soul. Their dashboards aren't plastic, and they've survived both the best and worst of what the 20th century had to offer. For the owners of these trucks, it's often the same story. Through both good and bad times they persevered, until one day they could turn the key and roll up in a customized truck everyone with good taste would admire.Custom Classic Trucks

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

As far as what they are worth, that depends on who you sell them to. To me, I would pay up to $200 for a hood in good shape. As far as the engine, a 351 would pull more money than the 305 because the 305 is still pretty common and available vers. people that want them. But most people do not want the eye brow hood or the boat anchor.

I actually am looking for a 351, so if it is...........

And I am always wanting another 60-61 GMC hood........

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

so, how about some more questions.....do the small block Chevy and the GMC V-6 share the bell housing bolt pattern?
Are the granny 4 speed bell-housings the same...as in will the starter from the SM465 4 speed out of the '66 fit on the V-6 bell-housing?

sorry for all the questions, the truck is about an hour away and I would like to have the parts I need when I go try to start the beast

it hasn't ran for a few years and I was told the reason is that the starter went out......

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

Joe,

NOPE the bolt pattern on the V-6 was/is different than other engines. One thing to remember that this block was the first 60 degree block produced. If you are going to use an automatic will will need an adaptor plate. A 3 speed or sm-420 will bolt right up to the oen bell housing, other might but I speak from exp. I had both before the automatic.

Jake

See my albums.

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

Cool, thanks Jake!
I was asking because we are going to pull the V-6 and drop in a 350...
So I guess at the least the bell housing will need to be changed...
Any thought on the starter?

It wouldn't happen to have a power steering pump bracket on it, would it?

Re: Wiw gmc v-6???

hey Joe,

The starter bolts up to the bellhousing, not the engine. I haven't searched for any yet because mine hasn't died (fingers crossed) so I'm not sure how readily available they are.....
