Re: Gear Vendors Question
Quote:
I was crawling around a four door taking out the Tilt fourspeed (super rare) and the Hydra boost and I noticed a two-speed button on the floor shifter (an eaton two-speed button) and I crawled under that nasty truck and there was a heavy duty Gear Vendors (it has the transmission pan style). I must have spent three hours on that truck and left with a wheel barrow full of parts. When I got to check out the stupid chick had no idea what it was, but I was not going argue. She wanted to charge me a core for the "transmission" I gave up and paid the bill plus the 'core'. I smiled all the way home. Then I realized what am I going to put this on? Mick |

Re: Gear Vendors Question
I bought a 77 4X4 Blazer that had a GV OD and a 350 HO motor. I put the 350 in my 71 swb. And am planing on installing the OD when I can afford it. I would like to put a 700r4 in it . Plus I have to get the correct adaptor from GV.

Re: Gear Vendors Question
If youre a rodder, the GV overdrive is awesome. Go 1st, then 2nd, then
2nd overdrive, and wave adiose to your oponent. The units are bullet proof, and the people at Gear Vendors are great. Yea, Ive got aTKO, but Id definately do a GV if I were running an auto. (also, 4spd overdrives arent even close) |

Re: Gear Vendors Question
I put the GV in my Burb with the caddy 500, used a one piece driveshaft with no problems. on the highway it drops my revs down 500 rpm. these are bullet proof and will always keep a $1500 resale 15 years down the road. When you order one, give GV's your tire size etc. and they will instal the right gear for your speedo to keep it accurate. If you change your tire size you can change that "color coded" gear. I bought mine from a hot rod shop down in Texas that CG pointed me to. saved me $300 bucks.(some where around there, just a matter of pulling out the receipt)
If you want something cheaper, a hint, GM used these in a lot of they're motorhomes with the T400. (pre electronics age) maybe find one in a wreckers/pull a part.

Re: Gear Vendors Question
I'm running a GVOD in my K10. Rear end is a 3:73 and tires are 31" diameter. At 75 mph I'm turning 2200 rpms. I honestly don't know how much the gas mileage changed since then because I have added Vortec heads and a Comp Cam kit. Its a lot quieter in the cab at highway speeds and I look at it like I have a six speed th400 now instead of a 3 speed. I can go into OD at 40 mph or above so it can be used in the city also. I put mine in when I went to a TH400 instead of a TH350 and I had to have my front driveshaft lengthened and my rear shaft shortened. It already had a one piece driveshaft. I bought mine from a local driveline shop and have had superior support from GV. Its a lot of money but I'm glad I did it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Re: Gear Vendors Question
I have one in my truck FI 350,Turbo 400,GVOD, 4:09 gears and 35 in tires. This truck tows a 4000 lb boat with ease and goes up hills at 55 with no problem. If you set the OD on auto it makes the turbo 400 act like a 4 speed.the unit at 55 will shift back to 3rd when you step on the gas to act like a passing gear or you can shift it manually to climb hills. I cruise around 2300 at 65 to 70 Probably the best addition I did to the truck.

Re: Gear Vendors Question
So, to get the best MPG, you have to know your torque curve. And then you need to keep the engine in the RPM range where it isn't too low. Is that correct?

Re: Gear Vendors Question
Keep in mind, you don't always have to be at your peak torque RPM. Let's say your torque peaks at 2500 RPM. You're probably good to run down the highway at 1900-2000 RPM. Much below that and you may see a mileage drop b/c of what LHM said.
