I have bent one, but never brke one. Glad to see you back at it. Good luck on getting here going again.

Sounds like somebody might have left the bolt in the front of the block after they installed the fuel pump. Check to make sure theres a short bolt and not a long bolt in where the rod retainer bolt is. PS,put thread seal on after checking. That things a pretty solid shaft of metal, never heard of anyone bending or breaking one until now.
