I believe i have an aftermarket rear axle and diff but how to know what it is exactly is my question.

It has several casting markings around the outside of the chrome 12 bolt cover, if i post these numbers would you be able to tell?

I want to switch to 5 bolt (its 6) so i can purchase the wheels i like but i want to keep the same gearing and if i sell this set up i'd like to know what i'm selling. After reading many posts i dont believe it can simply swap the axles but i'm not sure

It's better if you can post up some pics. of the differential. If it has an aftermarket carrier or ring and pinion then most likely the numbers on the outside aren't going to tell you much. What you'll need to do is pull the rear cover off, and check for the stamped numbers on the ring gear. you can also see what type of carrier you have also. After ding so take some pics and post them up so we can look at what you have, and tell you for sure.

P.S. if all your wanting to do is swap to 5 lug. take your existing axles out, take them to a reputable machine shop, have them re drill for 5 lugs, and reinstall. You can either get the drums from a 5 lug or have them drilled as well, because IIRC the brake components are the same from 6 to 5 lug.

now thats a great idea, i didnt know this could be done. If i can find a shop in town i'll definately take this route. I'll take a look at the drums and determine if new ones are in order. thank you!
