Unhappy Computer troubles. . . .

If any of you try to contact me and I do not answer right away, don't fret. I have been having computer problems that I have had little time to get on the phone with gateway about. I think my IBM harddrive is going south. And this one that is in there now is a replacement from the orginal one. @#$%^ IBM. Anyways, I will try to get on here as much as I can. Thanks, Jason.

Win 95??? Someone needs to upgrade BADLY! Does it still run? I'm nice and cozy with my Win XP 1600+ w/ GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with 11 fans. YES 11. It sounds like it is taking off!

I'd try to stay away from Seagate drives.

I've built computers and repaired a lot. And the electronics in Seagate drives seem to fail faster than other brands.

Best luck I've had was with the Western Digital. And easy to install.

Last time I tried to install a non gateway drive in a gateway, I had nothing but problems. I have a ata or ate something like that contoller, do you think I could just run to Best Buy and get a Western Digital and drop her in? Or am I gonna have problems?

My frist drive had developed a "rod knock", the read write head was hitting the side of the case. So Gateway sent me a new drive, and it was twice the size of my old one!!!!! Now that's a warrenty replacement!!!

I have had goold luck with Western Digital too. Nice & quiet!

Installing a non-gateway HD would be no problem. They aren't even gateways in the first place! Gateways doesn't manufacture hard drives. Go get a drive - you shouldn't have problems. Most computer parts are universal for PCs.

I have had 3 IBM hard drives go out. The first one I bought, the second and third were the ones that replaced it under warranty. I'll never buy another IBM drive.

I recommend Western Digital, especially the ones with the 8mb cache.

There are some propietary type computers on the market.

I haven't found a standard PC that wouldn't accept the Western Digital.

The software that comes wiht it makes for fast and easy install.

Biggest problem may be getting all your software back on it.

Last time I did a hard drive swap, I installed the new hard drive, then made the bad one a slave, and then transfered all my stuff via windows explorer.

I know that gateways does not make their own hard drives, but can't the bios not except it?

I have to disagree on maxtor being crap i use them and have had no problems. Hard drives are only as good as the person taking care of the pc. do you do regular mainteance try adding a two fan set to the hard drive to keep it cooler. Also if your pc had a hard drive with preinstalled software you will need that disk thats porbably why you have probelms.

Gateway bios might not accept it because it is too big (every computer - not just gateway has some limitation) If the computer is older, it probably won't see the whole drive. You can either update the bios (dangerous) or see if the HD maker has a program that will fix the limitation.

It may not be recognised as one unit, but the Western Digital software allows you to partition the drive and the bios should allow it.

Yes the old drive could be hooked up as a slave and transfer the file..........but only if it will come up to allow the transfer of files.
