AIR System Removal -Brass Pipe Plugs?
I just removed the AIR pump and plumbing from my '69 with a 250. I got off work early today and bought a set of 1/4" brass pipe plugs at the hardware store and had a great time installing them to plug up the AIR injection ports. After all that, sober second thought kicked-in: Should I be using brass plugs? Will brass be strong enough? Will they melt? I seek thy wisdom.

'76 Sierra Grande (Orange) - hate isn't too strong a word. Kid who bought it turned it into a hot rod. '68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect. '59 C-50 - with hoist. Truck is gone, wife isn't. Nuff said. |

Brass should be fine. I think the factory used brass nuts to hold the exhaust head pipes to the exahust manifolds. However, the temps outside the exhaust would be less than right inside the manifold. Rick's First Generation Camaro sells these plugs (gold ones) but not sure if they work for a 250. I use stainless pipe plugs to plug those holes (silver ones).

Bass will be fine I have mine plug with brass plugs from the hardware store

the "official/un official" plugs that Classic Industries sell are brass.
and....... brass would actually be easier to remove, if you'll ever need to.

I used brass plugs in the California head on my old 292. Ran it for 25 years and at least 250,000 miles. Maybe they'd have melted after 500,000 but I doubt it.
