Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

This question is posted in the general "Suspension" forum, but hasn't been answered in a while, so I thought I would try here too.

I bought a 79 Firebird rear end housing, that came with disc brakes. The parts look decent, but the rubber is 30 years old, so does anybody make a rebuild kit? I've searched and found zilch.

Is this not as simple as doing front calipers? Suggestions?

Your wisdom is requested.

I would check with your local auto parts store. Napa usually has what I'm looking for, if not in stock then they can order it. I got a complete carb rebuild kit for my Rochester on my 216 at Napa. I was suprised they had it in stock.

Are you looking for rubber bushings for the suspension or the disc brake rubber parts?

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

I want to replace the rubber dust shield and the o-ring/seals in the caliper itself. I haven't taken it apart yet, I didn't want to mess anything up in case there is a special way of doing it.

I've done front calipers before and its super easy, but I've heard that special precautions need to be taken with the e-brake cable, I need to research that a little more, but information is pretty scarce.

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

Solved! Thanks nickp51chevy!

Here it is for reference sake:

http://www.napaonline.com/masterpage...oot+Kit+-+Rear

I don't know why I didn't try Napa right off the bat. Blond moment!

Firebirds/Camaros don't list disc rear brakes for '78, '79, but the caddies used them and they are the same equipment. I was just asking for the wrong make.

Anyway, I would still like to hear of any special precautions if anybody has any experience.

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

Those calipers are not the easiest to deal with. There is a ratcheting mechanism inside to accomodate the parking brake (item 5-7 and 15 & 16 in the diagram). You may be better off just buying remanufactured.

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

Yep, go reman. that's what I did. Although one did leak at the piston before I got it on the road.

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

I've got time, and if I can save myself a cool $200 I'll try my hand at rebuilding these, I'll take pictures along the way and make a thread for it, that is if I succeed.

If not you all can point, laugh, and say "I told you so" ha ha.

bretcopsey: Thanks for the exploded view, that will come in handy.

Re: Rebuild GM E-brake calipers?

I know this is for a 82-86 rear setup, but figured the instructions might help seeing as it looks pretty similar to the picture above:
