HEI centrifugal lubrication?
Yo! Y'all!
Just assembled my new HEI distributor with springs, weights, and made it MSD ready,...does anyone know if I should lube the centrifugal weight pivots and the shaft central pivot that that system moves at, and with what? Todd.

Re: HEI centrifugal lubrication?
Only reason I ask is because the three year old HEI in my Camaro must've condensated to the point of building up corrosion between the centrifugal arms the the weights are attached to. So much that the mechanism froze.
The new HEIs come without any lube. Thought you guys might know if the lube would be too much of a dirt magnet. This pertains to both my Camaro and FRANKENTRUCKs' HEIs, so I'd sure like to find out. Thanks,Todd.

Re: HEI centrifugal lubrication?
I tried a little bit of WD40 once but that made a huge mess. I would try a dry graphite lube instead.

Re: HEI centrifugal lubrication?
Yo! Dudes, I just couldn't stand the wait, and I'd pretty much convinced myself that any thick lube would retain dust and dirt and be a problem.
WD40 is recommended to be used to dry moisture in vehicle ignition systems, so I covered the rest of the distributor and sprayed just the centrifugal advance mechanism. Then I took a new rag and wiped all I could off of the metal, leaving just the areas that I could not get to. Third try, I got the right mesh and the HEI dropped right back in the block. All set with a new HEI rebuilt with my old tuned set: weights, spring combo, MSD wiring/plug, and the vacuum advance limiter. Also has my old Summit high voltage coil. I think the light WD40 application will reduce the possibility of corrosion buildup and not retain to much dust/dirt. And I'll know to keep checking my centrifugal advance mechanism when I tune. Thanks for the good input. I'll post if I screwed it up! Todd.
