Because the guv'ment is protecting the folks from Darwin's law. Folks who might hurt themselves fooling with something they don't understand. I hope they outlaw pencils soon too. You could put an eye out with one of those things.

They did for 50 years or so. It's a good concept. They work very well. If you don't know how to handle the service and airing up procedures they can straight up kill you ASAP though.

Don't they still use split rims on Semis? They sure used too. As far as working safely with split rims, I recall Dirty Harry saying, "A man's got to know his limitations."

thats the problem... most men DON'T know there limitations.
We lost a soldier in the motor pool next to ours when a ring blew off a duce and a half. The tire had been on and aired up properly for an hr, let the truck down off the jack and boom. They told us he died instantly.

Heard a story almost exactly like that from my grandpa from when he was in the army. I've never messed with split rims and after that story i never want to.

My dad lost most of the use of his hand from one of those, and he still has wire in his fingers. He wont let me near them.

I`m with TX.These rims were a great idea that were required to be run on heavy trucks,actually,for safety.The only danger was in improper mounting.so,they were only unsafe if you were a tire jockey.We need to keep a few sets around for original restorations.Not for $800,of course.We`d prolly still see these used if tire bead design hadn`t caught up to become safe for heavy loads.Actually,clincher-type beads are known to blow off the rim too.
I saw a cool set of chrome split daully rims at an auction.I would have bought them but I had to go before they came up.

He probably ordered expensive tires (those rims are 16.5") to the tune of $800. When he took the truck in to get them mounted, they told him no way with the split rims. He probably paid for the tires in advance, and has no way to get his money back.

I researched this before I bought stock rims for my 72 3/4 ton. I did not find one shop in the yellow pages that would mount tires on a split rim.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner. Who are you going to get to work on the split rims? I would have to drive at least 25 miles to a big truck shop to get tires mounted. The local guys just won't work on them. I can't blame them either.

Not to argumentative, Tim, but they have been known to come apart on the highway/road.
Not good for pedestrians & other drivers.

these were only 16 inch... at least the 67 - 72 GM ones anyways.
And yeah, they DO pop apart after air up. the guy I mentioned at fort hood was putting the truck on the ground when it popped off.

Mine were 16.5 I gave them to some old fart that thought they were something special.
They aren't allowed in any Les Schwab store as far as I know as of about two years ago.

About 35 years ago I lost a good friend and the guy I bought my used tires and custom rims from in Waco Tx when he aired one uip and it took the top of his head off and then went through the roof and landed on the roof where it may be till this day as his son told the workers that if anyone touched it they were fired on the spot.

If you go around many tires shop and especially truck tire shops you will see plenty of inflation cages that are bowed out from the inside from these rims coming apart when the tires were inflated. You don't just have to worry about what do to the rim and ring when you change the tire but what everyone else did to it for the past 35 or 40 years.

interesting. I was always told, only saw, and only seen documentation that 16 inch was split rims, and 16.5s were one piece.

I was trying not to learn anything today.

I figured there were some other accidents,just kinda rare.I won`t argue it wasn`t because of safety that we no longer use them.But they "were" the best thing going to haul weight at one time.A far cry from Alcoas and radials used these days on big trucks.I never left them on anything I owned.

I wasn`t sure if I had ever seen a 16.5 split rim.The 16.5s came out about when split rims were on their way out.
