Man i got a deal............
I bought a whole 5 lug rear end that came out of a 71 chevy 2wd for $100.00 I am putting just the axles in my housing to convert to 5 lug. I saw a post on here that said the front spindles i got off a 72 would stick out farther than the 70 model 6 lug i have on it now. Is this true and is that three quarters of an inch and if i order wheels with more backspacing does that make it work?
Also if it is 3/4 of inch will it be noticeable? thanks ahead of time!!!! Last edited by BADPURPLE70CHEVY; 09-06-2009 at 04:43 PM. |

Re: Man i got a deal............
I have not done this myself yet, but from reading other post on here it is 3/4" per side so a total of 1 1/2". Most make up for it with backspacing. In my opinion it is noticable especially when you are behind the vehicle.

Re: Man i got a deal............
Just wanted to say hi. Your truck looks great! Did you do all the work yourself? I'm up the road in asheville, so if your up this way, bring your truck and stop by. I've got a '71, so I'm not sure about the wheels moving out. I think thats just if you buy aftermarket dropped spindles. Mine has dropped spindles and it looks fine. I've got 15x8 rallies all around. I would do it if it was me, for the disc upgrade if nothing else. Do you have another set of wheels? Your wheels look new and switching to 5-lug, you would need another set of rims. Awesome truck!

Re: Man i got a deal............
You really shoud not swap the longer axles into the shorter '70 housing, the brakes and hardened bearing surfaces will not be in the right place. just swap out the whole rear end. as far as track width on the front, discs add about 1.5 inches I think, just remember that when you get wheels or tires.

Re: Man i got a deal............
A '70 may or may not be the same width as a 71-72. There was a change some time in 1970 to the wider rear end. Measure yours to be sure before you pull thing apart. The wider diff is 63-3/4" from wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface.
