Tranny pan gasket replacement - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well I am going to replace the tranny pan gasket this weekend, it is leaking a bit, and I looked under the Burb to get a look and it seems like the front pan bolts are under the crossmember. Can I reach these with a swivel socket? Any tips on getting these out?

I hope I don't have to take out the tranny to replace a pan gasket. Doesn't look like a lot of room, but just wondering.

Also, is it worth getting a new aluminum pan rather then using the original steel pan. I have read previous post and it seems that people that have replaced with a nice aluminum pan had less issues with leaks.

350 tranny.

I use a 1/4 drive swivel socket and it fits right up in there. I replaced my pan at the same time with a aluminum pan with a cork gasket and have been leak free for 3 years.

1/4 in drive with a swivel.
if its still a pain, you can unbolt the tranny mount and lift the back of the tranny with a jack.

I hope you are doing the screen filter too. I've never dropped the pan without replacing that while I'm there.

make sure when you have the pan off to check the flange where the bolt holes are . they tend to disform due to over tightening and causes many leaks

do not overtighten only 12-15ftlbs of torque on those bolts

i too lift the tail of the tranny up a bit for better access

I will be replacing the screen filter also. Came with the new gasket.

very simple job, definetly get your self an aluminum pan...here is a picture of mine...

Thanks big_al_71. Kind of hard to see your pan with all that dirt and oil on engine and tranny. You really should clean that up a bit

It looks like you are running a deeper tranny pan then the stock one. Maybe it is just the photo.

Al, did you use a different trans cross member to make the deep pan fit?. I tried once with stock cross member and a deep pan wouldn't clear.

Alum pan seals better due to the thicker more rigid flange. Can get one cheap on Ebay. That's what I have and it workes fine. Also came with a rubber seal which seems to seal better than the cork ones I've used in the past. I sprayed some high tack on everything to make sure it seals.

Deeper pans also tend to hold a bit more fluid and usually are finned to disapate heat better.

Yes you are right damn thing is super dirty!! Lol

It is a deeper pan and it hold two extra quarts...

I used the tubular tranny crossmember from CPP and there was zero issues with clearances...
