Cab/door interchangeability?
I'm still not sure whether or not I want to fix or replace the rusty cab and doors on my '79. Amazingly the fenders and bedsides are completely rust free even though the cab can almost be powered flintstone style.
Anyway, can anyone tell me what doors will fit on a '79 or earlier cab? Did they ever change the opening/hinges/latches? Can I get some off a newer suburban? (local yard has a ton of them) Last edited by Number21; 09-02-2009 at 09:21 PM. |

Re: Cab/door interchangeability?
the only changes are 73-76 doors aren't made for power window or locks, 77-87 (88-91r/v) are almost the same except the door panels and inside door handles changed in 81

SWEET! I opened the door on one of the burbs and was just speachless about how nice and easy and quiet it opened and closed. Too bad some idiot ruined the engine in it and wrote "clunker" on the outside.

Alright, while we're talking about it - how do the doors come off, hinges and all? Looks like 3-4 bolts in each hinge on the body, is that it?

Re: Cab/door interchangeability?
If the hinges are in good shape and quiet on the new doors, your best bet is to pull the doors off with the hinges. If they are power doors take the time to undo the wiring harness and all of the wires before you start loosening the bolts. Yes there are 2 hinges per door and either 3 or 4 bolts per hinge(can't remember sitting at my work desk).
