Re: alternator squel
it's the belt making the noise i bet, did it spin freely by hand? allignment?, too tight? new belt?
take a bar of soap and coat the inside of the belt, does it go away?

Re: alternator squel
loose belt don't use soap, it will only make it slip more and conceal the real problem. Just tighten the belt.

Re: alternator squel
ok i had a feeling it was a loose belt cuz the belt isn't as tight as it was before....but my uncle said it was too tight before...and its suppose to have a little bit of slack to it also its all lined up good

Re: alternator squel
To check belt tension on an alt, you should grab the alt fan (Engine not running of course) and try to turn it by hand. If the alt pulley moves without the belt moving then it is to loose. Check it again after it has been run awhile cuz sometimes a belt (especially if it is new) will stretch. Your uncle must be thinking of a generator. Unless you are a beast or brutal, it is pretty hard to get an alt belt too tight. Just use common sense. Also if the belt was slipping and getting the pulley hot, you should check the belt. It may have gotten glazed. In other words the sides of the belt will be shiney and hard instead of soft and pliable like it should be. If it is glazed, change it or it may continue to squeal and slip even if it is the proper tension.

Re: alternator squel
Tighten the belt, I just replaced my alternater and when I initially tightened the belt I thought it was tight but after a couple of days it started squeeling, retightened and it's been quiet since.
