How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

my '69 was cursed from the factory with aqua visors, visor brackets, and visor keepers. if that wasn't bad, it was also cursed with a non-reproduced-color dash pad, steering wheel, and vinyl bench seat material.

I looked all over for good used pieces that would match, but came to a conclusion that I was going to need to paint or dye original or repopped pieces.

I painted an original dashpad a few weeks back and it turned out great! so with the lessons I learned, I thought I'd document my visor recolor so others can have an interior that finally matches too.

I'd like to try armpads and a seat sometime to see how this paint would hold up to constant use, but visors and dashpads are great candidates for method.

here we go.

first you need necessities. beer, garage, vinyl paint, Bulldog (details later), and Smokey and the Bandit......

remove the bracket and the aluminum rod from the visors. it will take a twisting action and should be difficult. after I had these pieces taken out of the visors, I blasted the paint off of the brackets and polished the rods with a bit of steel wool. here's the rods after I polished one......

next step is to evaluate your existing visors. trim loose threads or burn them to melt. mine original visors started to unravel at the seam, so I took them to an upholstery shop and have them restitched. $50 for both.

next is to clean the years of dirt and Armour All off the visors. a good dish detergent and a steel wool pad is used......

scrub, scrub, scrub.......

and set out to dry, THOROUGHLY......

I had the paint custom mixed at a local paint shop (thanks True Auto of Merriam, KS) and picked up a can of BULLDOG adhesion promoter. this stuff is expensive, but well worth it!

lightly coat the visor with Bulldog. wait 2 minutes, and coat again lightly. make sure the coverage is complete. now let dry for 10 minutes. the surface will be slightly tacky at this time......

now it time for color. several light coats dry and set up MUCH better than one heavy coat; light coats to adhere to the vinyl better......

set the visors out to dry. it will take several days for the paint to cure onto the vinyl. reinstall.

I'll try to get some pics of the final product tomorrow.

remember. Bulldog and patience...... and a brew or six.

Awesome FAQ Doug!

Definitely worthy of Krue's FAQ thread.

Curious though.... these were the visor's from your truck correct?

Have you used the Bulldog stuff before? I've never heard of it. I'm always on the lookout for better products then what I normally use.

If I substitute Miller High Life for Shlitz will my results be the same?

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

or you Chris, the substitution can be made!! me likey Miller as well!

I heard about Bulldog from my brother (bigdon-70blazer). I think it was recommended to him by his paint and body guy.

I won't paint anything vinyl without it. gooooood stuff!

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

Good job on the how to, Doug. Vinyl paint works well but, it will wear off on high contact areas. I sprayed the gold dash pad black on my '72 years ago and it wore off where i put my hand up by the defroster to keep the fingers warm in the winter.

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

yep Ron your right. in high use areas it can get interesting. that's why I'd lke to experiment with the Bulldog on armrests or seat belt brackets. it may last a bit longer, or it may not. time will tell!

Well, it's not so much that it comes off as that it wears off. Can always spray again later, it's not a regular maintenance thing though.

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

Looks good, nice job. I'll be looking at doing my dash pad like that. It has no cracks, just faded. Thanks for the info.

I'll have to replace the Schlitz with some High Life.

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

Yep, Bulldog is the way to go. Plus, you can pick it up from Wal-Mart cheaper. To answer your question on seat belt brackets, it will not hold up very well as they get nicked and scratched from time to time. Method works well on Dash pads, Door panels, etc. Arm rests not as well, as the oil from your hands will start to break it down over time. Also, you can get 1/2 pints and pint cans at any auto paint place of vinyl dye, and after experimenting with rattle cans and airbrushes, I will say airbrushes work the best for spraying vinyl dye. It can spray very fine mist coats which is best for coverage. The trick is just covering the surface enough. Too much in vinyl dying is worse than just getting a uniform color. A key is mist coating and mist coating to achieve the final result to a long lasting dyeing job. Trevor

Hey Trevor, not to highjack this thread, but how well is your dyed steering wheel holding up?

Re: How To..... Paint/Dye Match Vinyl

Haven't used it yet in the truck. It should hold up very well, used many things to clean the wheel very well, and set it up in a heated area to open the pores, I don't think I will have any problems with it holding up to the use. It helps to that it was originally blue. I have dyed many interior parts over the years. Not only on my truck and Chevelle, but my daily driver Jeep wrangler, all of which has held up to use. Trevor

your right, Nigel. they do look a bit glossy, but they were still wet and the flash didn't help.

they finally dried to a medium gloss finish.

Doug, sorry I didn't mean for my posts to be looked at as stealing the glory of your thread, but if for some reason this turns into a sticky, I wanted people to see of other success dyeing. Everyone loves pics. By the way, your visors look good. Trevor
