yet another rear gear question...longhorn.

i have always asumed that i had a 3.73 rear end. i followed the instrutions found in this post. about turning the tire and counting how many times the driveline turns...

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ight=rear+gear

my results say its a 4.11. it could be right i guess, but this truck has never be able to spin the tires much, and its a bit of a dog off the start. the power of the motor should be enough.. on the high way i run 70mph at 3000 rpm. 16 inch rims. Tire size 235/85/r16.

does this sound like a 411 to you? btw its an open axel.

What trans??

It is possible to have 4:11, but more likely that you have 3:73's.

I have 4.11 gears and turn 3000 rpm at 70 mph. Tires are 265/70R16. Is your Longhorn a 3/4 ton?

Re: yet another rear gear question...longhorn.

dave, with as original as your truck was when you got it, it is very safe to say the rear has never been opened.
With that being said, 4.10 was the tallest gear you could ever get stock. 4.10, 4.57, and 5.13 (I think the last one was only on trucks with the dual rear wheel option)
Being a small block and auto, the 4.10 was the standard gearset, so since nothing was optioned otherwise, the truck was all original when you got it, and the spin the wheel test agreed with it all.... you have a 4.10 gear.

I would not blame the rear end for the lack of acceleration, pop the hood and start placing blame there, Remember these are HEAVY, and a stock small block is not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination.

Be a good time to look into the condition of the engine. Compression test and tuneup maybe. Look at the advance mechanism in the distributor. It could be the mech advance is siezed up and that will make it sluggish and thirsty. Also the vacumn advance may be bad. Or it may only need some new plugs, wires and cap.
