few ? abbout a 700r4

I have a chance to buy a 700r4 out of a 86 safari van for $250 PLUS TAX with 90 day waranty. It coms with tork converter, tv cable, not sure filler/dip stick coms with it.
Question 1: is that a good deal?
Question 2: is that a good year transmission?
Question 3: does it have a mechanicle valve body?

Regarding Question #2 - I posed a similar question to the transmission shop last week when I had my TH350 rebuilt. They said that 1987 and newer 700R4's were the best bet - older ones, 82-86, had problems that were addressed in 87 and later models. I don't recall the specific problems, though.

Not sure about your other questions.

you can also have those 82-86 700r4's built to the 87^ standerds...

71 SWB Stepside, was a 250, now is a 402 Big Block with 4 speed and 3.73's ( was crushed by a tree, bed sold, motor pulled) was my first truck!... oh well...

72 LWB 4x4 350 4-speed 3.08's posi wearing army olive drab green (SOLD!)

68 BURB 50TH LOOKALIKE work in progress, soon to have 250-I6 with a 3-speed on the tree 4.11's and posi ( currently sitting in back yard tarped awaiting time, $$$, and lots of love!)

67 1 TON- work truck 396 sm 420 4-speed, flat bed 4.57 gears "big red" (my first landscape truck, very rusty and crusty! but still gets the job done when needed!)

i'm pretty sure the valve bodys were updated in 87,my 86 went out very easy,but the 89 i replaced it with has stood up very well the past 3 years.......imo the 700r is a great trans,good mpg and a really low 1st gear......like i said its just my 2 cents

Thats right.The 87 and newer are better.The pre 86 can be upgraded.It sounds like a good deal.For lock-up you will need a wire kit from summit or jegs.They both sell kits. B&M<painless andlokar all have kits.You can do a search on the board.Someone posted directions on how to do it yourself.

Will a 700r4 stock behind a v6 live behind a v8 very long? The torque curve will be different so the stock converter may not be the best option. I guess I'm assuming for a v8.
