No it is illegal to remove, modify or replace a vin tag. Otherwise theives could easily steal a truck and swap the VIN. If you look closely you will see they have special headed rivets that cannot usually be found locally. If your cab does not match the frame number you should check with your DMV to see what to do. In Idaho if you swap the cab you need to have a title or bill of sale for it and the frame and take the truck to DMV for inspection. The title and registration reflect the numbers stamped on the frame. When I pulled my cab I found a second serial number on the drivers side top rail I did not know was there.

Please tell me where to find the VIN numbers on a 1953 chevy 1/2 ton frame.

Re: Help, Vin Plate

Mine is so beat up and abused that it would be hard to know it was a vin tag if you didn't know what you were looking at.

Re: Help, Vin Plate

There are most definitely places you can buy the repro Vin plates.

1947-49: http://www.classicparts.com/1947-49-...ctinfo/33-011/
1950: http://www.classicparts.com/1950--Do...ctinfo/33-012/
1951-52: http://www.classicparts.com/1951-52-...ctinfo/33-013/
1953: http://www.classicparts.com/1953--Do...ctinfo/33-014/
1954: http://www.classicparts.com/1954--Do...ctinfo/33-015/

The only thing that would be illegal is stamping a serial number on it that wasn't the original one assigned to the truck. But for the purpose intended by the OP, these tags more than serve the purpose of replacing one that has become illegible or damaged.

They sell the plate, and it is very reasonable.

I got my VIN plate rivets from them. Fast shipping and they even sent me a free hat that I wasn't expecting.
