Re: getting the right starter
what has been changed from stock? You may have to change the flywheel.

Re: getting the right starter
it's all stock-The last starter I got it seems the nose is not long enough so the starter gear doesn't fully contact the flywheel, but the parts book says it's the right starter.

Re: getting the right starter
Do you have the original starter? If so have it rebuilt. Is the original starter a cast iron housing?

Re: getting the right starter
Was the starter bolted on with a straight across bolt pattern or diagnal bolt pattern? if you have the smaller flywheel it would be the same as a powerglide and would take the straight bolt pattern.

Re: getting the right starter
It seems like a starter from a 400 block fits-does this make any sense?

Re: getting the right starter
I'm not sure about parts stores any more. I went to Advance Auto Monday for a set of front brake shoes for a 70 GMC and the computer listed a number for PADS!
I thought the only difference was the nose cone on the starters. Auto vs manual and 153 tooth vs 168 for the autos. I6 or any V8 could use the same starter as long as the flywheel teeth were the same. Last edited by 71tahoe; 09-09-2009 at 11:52 AM. |

Re: getting the right starter
Why not pick up a hi-torque mini-starter from Skip White on Ebay - I got mine shipped for under $100 (from memory)?

Re: getting the right starter
I'm not sure, but I am guessing it is a hydromatic. Is that correct? If so ask for a lester number 3510 starter. That is a starter with an aluminimum housing with staggered mounting holes, using 2 long bolts, and not the straight across with 1 long and 1 short bolt.
