That gas tank!

So, unlike alot of people I haven't relocated the gas tank in my '72 and since I've installed bucket seats and I don't want to go with the original style cardboard cover as it will be exposed, I'm wondering what kind of custom covers people have made for their tanks? Show me pics if ya got em!

Cool, I took a look at that and I might consider it along with those kick panel pieces too. My only concern is glueing it on the tank like that. I'd have to make sure the fuel lines, sending unit, etc are all perfect so I didn't have to rip it off to fix something.

Re: That gas tank!

I am pretty sure the carpet kits just clip on the top of the gas tank. Atleast mine does. Where did you get all of your woodgrain pieces for your truck? They look very nice. Trevor

Thanks. I got the door inserts from LMC and the glovebox and ashtray from Classic Parts of America.

The gauge panel I bought from a guy on ebay that rebuilds them with the white vinyl gauges and new bezels. I special ordered mine with the chrome/woodgrain bezel.

Re: That gas tank!

get a piece of masonite or luan plywood, cut it to fit from floor to the panel just below the back window. 3 m super 77 some automotive carpet of your color choice to the newly cut panel. mount in truck by screwing the top into the metal panel below the back window and if you think it needs it, you could attach the bottom to the cab floor with a couple of "L" brackets. if you cut the panel big enough to fit up into the cab corners...the vacant are behind the panel would be a nice place to mount some 6"x9" speakers there. if that was the goal to cover the tank and mount speakers, use the masonite instead of the luan...it is very flexible and could be cut larger than the actual opening size, and when installing it (no seats in truck at the time) you could bend it in the center to allow the corners to tuck into the cab corners. just my $.02 worth.

Re: That gas tank!

I thought about that but I think I'd probably build a center console to hold the cover in place instead of fastening it to the cab.

Re: That gas tank!

That would work out okay too, I suppose if you attached the center console to the tank cover, you could step up the tickness of of the tank cover (like 1/2" mdf or plywood), then your seats could hold it and the console in place and not attach anything to the cab. By the way what are those seats out of? And are those air bags located in the sides of them? I haven't got any seats for my yet and like the looks of the ones you chose.

I don't know what the seats came out of. I bought them for 20.00 from a friend who had them in a 88-98 truck.

I think they're caravan seats but I'm not sure. Yeah, those are air bags you see on the sides.

That does look good! Is your carpet laid over a piece of plywood or something? It looks pretty flat and seems to come up higher than the pre-made covers you can order.

Re: That gas tank!

i took a roll of black carpet from the parts store, trimmed it to size, and hung it in place. The top edge is folded back (and I wan a hand full of self tapping screws up into the cab back wall under the window. Totally invisible, no one would ever see them even if they were looking, gravity holds the bottom down (at 100 MPH with both windows down and some holes in the floor, it was starting to wave a little) yet, slide the seats forward and flip the carpet up, and the tank/lines are right there.

Re: That gas tank!

Go to your local upolstry place and ask for multipile carpet, , it is very stretchy, covers gorgeous, and works very well, buy a can of spray trim adhesive and some 1/8" landau foam and go to work, you will have a gorgeous cover, that can come off easy enough, and will cost you roughly 50 dollars, cheap is good and works well, that is the stuff i use for doing interiors and car stereos alot of the time for ppl, btw, interior is looking great!

i'm sure I have pics somewhere, but it'd be quicker to take new ones and post them.
They won't be on before supper time though, but a bunch of crap to do this afternoon.
As for the 100 MPH thing, this engine is in limp mode, on its last leg... so no.

Cool, thx bro. Is that a fire extinguisher beside the seat?

And you didn't have to pull it loose just for me!

Re: That gas tank!

yeah, I try to keep a fire ext in all vehicles at all times.
This carpet trick was very easy, and the only reason it looks 'pushed in' over the console is becouse I had a bunch of crap sitting on the console leaning back on the carpet before i took these pics. It normally hangs flat.
