a/c belt adjust

this belt has always been a bit strange. i guess this is normal, but for the hell of it i will put it on here...

last year i have the old r12 system converted. they did a great job, but after a week i brought it back to them because it would squeak when the clutch engaged on the highway... so they did, and it stopped. one year later, the clutch burned up on me..

they just put in a new compressor, under warrantee...same deal, squealed on the high way or when i rev fast.. so this time i put a little adjustment on it.. it doesn’t squeal, but the belt wiggles...see here...

now i am a bit concerned, i don’t want to over tighten it. i fear in a year the clutch would burn up again, but that could be unrelated.. so, should i leave it or ????

here is w/o the ac on

and me fingering it the belt that is..lol

Re: a/c belt adjust

That does seem odd -- the belt looks like it's tight enough, until the A/C is engaged. Are the pulleys in perfect alignment? If so, I would snug that belt just a bit more... temporarily at least, and see if the wiggle goes away.

I wonder if the first clutch was just defective, and the belt tension had been okay.

Re: a/c belt adjust

I have this EXACT same problem with both of my 72's. One has been converted to R-134, and one is original R-12. I use a bar of soap to soften the belt up, and just end up changing to new belts every summer. After a while, the belts get glazed and will just squeal like a pig. The problem seems to be the worst when it is super hot (over 105) outside. I don't think the rebuilt A-6 compressors are worth a crap, the front bearing seems to go out pretty quickly.

Re: a/c belt adjust

I just converted mine over to R-134 as well as it's doing the exact same thing!!! The belt seems to lose tension and at high speeds it squeaks. Even my temperature at best reaches to only about 49 degrees. I sure hope someone has a solution...

Re: a/c belt adjust

That belt looks a little stretchy, rubber band like, I'd get a different brand of belt and try it. Note that the "pull" side of the belt seems to run OK, the slack side has the vibration, I'd be more concerned if you had a vibration on the pull side. There is a pretty long chunk of belt there with no idler in between, some shaking could be expected, but I think you just need a new less strechy belt.

Re: a/c belt adjust

this is the 3rd belt, all do the same thing. i agree the distance from the bottom pulley to the compressor is too long of distance. perhaps rigging some sort of tensioner...?

i am happy that others have the same problem...lol, i always feel alone with my odd issues..
