Re: Can you Remember your First

My dad bought a burnt orange 74 K10 when I was pretty young (maybe about 3 or so). I remember riding in it standing on the seat, next to Dad. Riding in the back of the truck, too. Can't do much of that legally anymore.

My Grandpa bought a new blue 76 K10 around the same time. He called it the "Teddy Roosevelt truck", because it was a "Rough Rider". That one got replaed by an '81 that didn't live too long. One of his service techs taught it to roll over. That's a trick they usually only get to do once. No one was hurt, but the truck was mangled.

Re: Can you Remember your First

My first Square body ride was with Gramps in his new 73 GMC. He let me drive him to the barn when I was 9 or 10 in that old GMC. Right after I "helped" him finish building the stake bed on the frame.

Gramps passed on in '91 and that old truck is long gone. My 76 still brings me back.

Re: Can you Remember your First

My dad had a 73 2wd, Longbed, Spanish Gold. I remember sitting inside the engine compartment helping him put the headers on... We lived out in the middle of nowhere so of course took it down the county road and opened it up. I was hooked for life at that point... I'm gonna be getting my 8th one here pretty soon.

Re: Can you Remember your First

I remember mine. A 1977 chevy scottsdale long bed. My grandfather bought it new in 78 i think, then he pasted away in 79. My dad inherited it and we used it around the farm. Then one day i told my dad that i wanted to fix it up and drive it when i got my licence. So thats what we did. I drove it through high school then sold the truck when i went to college. That was 10 years ago and i still have people ask me about that truck. I sure do miss her, and glad to have the chance to build another square body with my dad. Now that my wife and i are pregnant maybe one day ill beable to build one with my kid.

Re: Can you Remember your First

this is a good thread. obviously we are all a bit nostalgic.....

my dad bought a new 1973 C 20 w/ a 350 and a 4 speed and air (Custom 20). we farmed and i used to drive it around while he fed cattle in granny low. learned how to drive it when i was 5 or 6.

when i was 14 i got my 1978 Chevy Silverado--burnt orange and Tan w/ the rare orange interior. 350 Auto. drove it until i was 17. i've had 10 or 12 1973-87s over the years including a fleet of 3 square body wreckers (i have posted pics before). for the last 3 or 4 years i've had a 1980 C 10 w a 350. just an old truck.

when i hit 40 i went on a quest to relive my youth and i found a very close approximation of the '78 i had in HS. its a 1977 Bonanza C 10 loaded up w/ a 454. cruise even works. best part is its the same color as my high school pickup. belonged to a 82 YO man who bought it new. it is pretty slick. i am slowly taking it to the way i had mine in HS.

the old 454 really hums. i'd have gotten in some trouble w/ that in HS.

Re: Can you Remember your First

I was 10. 81 GMC 3/4 ton 3 days old. Went over to pick up a load of hay, 70 90# bales, only could get 50 on the 69 1/2 ton. Dad discovered that he needed to load more forward, toe steered around the corners pretty bad. Then went to back in the barn and discovered that it was 1 bale too high, found that out when the top bales dropped off and dented the roof and hood. 3 days old, and already a farm truck.

Still have the truck, but going to scrap it, it's beyond salvaging. 2nd motor with only 57,000 miles, gives you an idea how hard she was ridden.

Re: Can you Remember your First

Yup I remember my 1st. November 1976, my Dad brought home a brand spanking new Dark Carmine 1977 C-10 Custom Deluxe. Went for a ride that evening, I was 9. We had the truck until 1991 when I was in College. I used the truck for transportation my last few years at school, but Dad had me sell it since I had a real nice 65 to drive and I needed money for school. Wish I had never done that...I miss that truck.

Re: Can you Remember your First

Wow. It seems like yesterday i got my first truck and it was a 83 GMC sierra classic. I was 17 and ready to move out of the crappy and slow pt cruiser. I was also a jouiner in High school and i knew dad was going out to look at a truck and then i came home to find it sitting in our drive way. i was so excited i had some thing that was old. I know that sounds weird. but lol. I called claims before anyone else could. And dad's oringal plan was not to give it to me, but to sell it to one of our emplyee's at our business and well needles to say i got it after i was so excited and begged dad to let me have it.

But after about 6,000 miles the engine started knocking and i was very upset cause i didn't have it for about a month and half but on my 18th birthday i got it back and was able to drive it with the new 350 in it and was it fun.

Then that summer after that i got the chance to paint it and i was very much thinking about what i could do different and i was about stressed about it. But I went back original almost but took the badges off and bumber gards off bed rails and big elphant ears for mirrors. and a few other things. And i lost it for about all of that summer. after about mid september i got it back and man did i miss that truck.
But i am still driving it daily and will never get rid of it.

Day after dad bought it.

After Wheels and motor was put in and on.

And it now with out the bed cover

Re: Can you Remember your First

My first square was a 1981 k-5 2wd. I was 15 and took the top off the day i took it home! It was solid white, with tan interior. It had 15 x 10's and 295/50's. The factory 305 was taken out and it had a gas guzzelin, oil burnin,396 that ran ok. I had alot of fun in that thing!! A couple months back the kat i sold it to called me up and asked if i wanted it back. I went and looked at her and she was pretty rough! No motor, trans, rear end, seats or wheels. I was a sad site!!

Re: Can you Remember your First

I can;t remember my first ever ride in a square...but distinctly remember owning or buying my first. It was a beautiful 1973 C20, 350 auto. Had belonged to a construction firm owner, was teal and white inset, cherry interior, had had the 454 but that had been swapped for the 350 since the guy THOUGHT it would get better mileage while towing. When it didn't and had less power, he sold me the truck. It had great power! Maybe not for towing what he wanted to two. Anyway, after owning it for about five years and when it started to need a motor, I traded it straight across for a cherry 1965 Jeep Wagoneer 4x4 which I later sold for almost 4K...had bought the truck for $1500.00 in 1995. I have had three since and have two of the three left one is the C20 454 auto, the other a C20 4speed 350. 78 and 74 repsectively.

Re: Can you Remember your First

I remember my first ride. I was 17 and I test drove a black 87 350 loaded. I was in love with that truck. I had it bought, even drove it to school the next day but after the insurance man told me that it was going to be almost 200 a month just for insurance alone I had to take it back. It was a very sad day for me. I think that is why I love these truck so now. Is because I was just heart broke when I had to take that truck back. But I have had a bunch since then. So I guess it is a happy ending.

Re: Can you Remember your First

Mine was last month when I bought my '87. Never rode in one just knew a lot of people that had them. I've ridden in a '72 which is very similar though, not really anything special ride-wise for this generation IMO.
