De-greasing an engine

My 350 is in need of a good cleaning and painting. I'm not sure what is the best way to get all the oil, grease, dirt and grime off of her. What would you suggest? Powerwasher, carwash, soaping water with a scrub brush? And help will be appreciated.
When I get ready to paint the motor, can I use a brush without the lines showing or is a spray paint can better?
Thanks,
Joe

Re: De-greasing an engine

Use POR Marine Clean. Then paint with POR 15 engine paint. You can brush it on, it is self leveling, no brush strokes left behind.

Re: De-greasing an engine

I did the engine cleaner setting at the spray wash. My engine was still orange underneath!

Re: De-greasing an engine

I'd scrape as much gunk off as you can, then use a pressure wash wand to get the rest.

From there I'd just get a painters bucket, and a gallon of Simple green max. (You can get it at just about any auto parts store).

I use this stuff all the time now, since it doesn't stink and leave a nasty mess.
Plus it doesn't smell too bad on the hands, or your work area after cleaning up.

http://www.simplegreen.com/products_ps_max.php

See about taking off the intake, and all the tin and have it professionally cleaned if you can. Along with the manifolds if you are using them.

Re: De-greasing an engine

I used to use Simple Green all the time (I still use it for a lot of things). But when it comes to de-greasing an engine, POR is 10X better. I was blown away watching the grease just melt off.

Re: De-greasing an engine

Dollar general oven cleaner is what I use. Spray it on, wait about 15 minutes then hose or pressure wash off.

Purple power is also good stuff. I have had good results with that as well.

scratch & scrape nasty areas to bare metal, soak with oven cleaner (store brand OK) when crap flows use pressure washer then follow up with greased lightening solvent (Lowes Home Improvement). keep away from paint!

Re: De-greasing an engine

Soften the grease with a solvent:fuel, engine cleaner, etc, and scrape.i like Brakleen once the bulk is removed.I`d use it from the start but it`ll cost you.It blasts and disolves the crud away.
