1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

Update: 12-18-08

Never really been on the message board before, so i thought i'd check it out tonight and post up what my project is. When i turned 14 i was dying to get a truck. Everything i looked at was two expensive or a rust bucket. Then i stumbled across this truck. It's a plain jane 78 k-10. When i first got it, it had next to nothing for rust, but the engine needed freshened up badly. The price was right for $1,000 so with some help i bought it. Now it has been a never ending project for the last five years. I've bought and parted out i think 4 trucks, a blazer, and a suburban just to get parts i neede for it. I replaced the factory wheels with a set of rally's about a year after i got it. Switched to chrome mirros and front bumper. Put a trailer hitch on her. 2 years ago my dad and i replaced one bedside. Then we put a new motor that we built ourselves in it. Replaced the Th350 and 203 transfer case with a rebuilt Th400 and a converted to part time 203 transfer case. This past spring i bought a new cab for it as the iowa winters have taken its toll on the original one in the last five years. Its getting ready to go on this spring. When i do that i'm adding air conditioning, power locks and windows, and carpet.i'm also gonna replace the bed floor with another one i bought. Over the christmas break here i'm replacing the 3.08 gear 1/2 ton axles with a light duty 10 bolt, 8-lug front axle and the rear with a dana 70 hd. Both are 3.73 gears. This spring i will also put a posi in the rear end. Also when ichange out the axles i'm beefing up the springs and adding a 4 inch lift. Unfortunately i can't use my rallys when i do that anymore, so i will have to settle for wagon wheels for the time being which i am painting the same color as the truck. By the way, i swear by thosae BFG All Terrain T/As. Those tires were practically new on the truck five years ago when i bought it, they are just getting down to half tread life and i've put close to 30,000 hard miles on them. Belwo ares some pics of when i firsat got the truck and how it looks now. Also some pics of all the crap i have for it. Feel free to give your input. All is appreciarted.

By the way referencing "The big Green Beast". It got started by some of my buddies. You see i was the first one of my group of friends to get a vehicle, and as time progressed i had the oldest vehicle. It seems that no matter what we put the old truck through that it never broke or got stuck. It became well known while i was in high school by that name and everybody knew whos truck it was. Now my brother drives it to school every now and then and it still holds the same reputation. So now we just refer to it as "The big Green Beast."

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

Nice project ! your truck reminds me of my 77 K10 (same color). You have some good plans for It and I am also painting my wagon wheels body color.

Also have you thought about a steeing box brace? this area is Known to fail on our trucks and is something I am planning on doing soon. I hear they are a good investment if you lift and run bigger meats.

Lots of helpful people on here and great info.

Welcome from New Hampshire

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

I've heard of alot of people putting the braces on the blazers more so than the trucks. I have seen several blazers where thay have done that. I will keep that in mind though, i never even thought about it. Thanks for the info.

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

I really like the color too. When i do repaint it though, i think i'm going to a little darker green, and a little more metallic. What i really like is the dark green 70 chevelles. I'm thinking that color with the chevelle white stripes on the hood and black interior.
Thanks again to all who have replied.

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

Took the old girl hunting this past weekend. The carb started acting up real bad and poured so much gas through the engine that i had to change the oil before i came home. Oh well, guess its time to fix that.

Also started the tear down on my new front axle. Will get pics up tomorrow.

Nothing like a little motivation to get some progress done. Sorry to hear about the carb issue. What front axle are you going with?

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

well i really wanted a dana 44hd, which i still hope to use in the future. For now though i'm using a corporate 3/4 ton ten bolt. The price was right and it has the same gear ratio as the rear i am getting. The rear end i'm getting fopr the truck(which i hope to get right after christmas) is a dana 70 hd dually axle.

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

Started working on the front axle today. Got the lockouts pulled out and wire brushed the housing for a while. Waiting to borrow that special socket to get the hubs off. Probably pull the tie rod off tomorrow. Got the carberator pulled off, and a different one put on for now. Going to have somebody who knows what they are doing look at it.

Re: 1978 Chevy K-10 (The big Green Beast)

Well folks like always plans change. I didn't get anything done this last spring or summer. Now i'm in college and living away from home throught the week and its hard to work on the old girl. I've been aquiring more parts for it, like i now have in my possession the lift kit and i now have a 14 bolt with a limited slip instead of getting the d70hd. Alos i never got the front ten bolt rebuilt which worked out because i just about got my buddy talked into selling me his dana 44hd. Also the nice little small block is coming back out and in its place is going a pretty well beefed up 427 tall deck. Alos today i did mange to go to the local swap meet and found a really nice windshield for it. Which will look really good in the cab i picked up over the summer for the truck if iever get around to fixing it. All in all i think the old truck is ready for transformation or its getting ticked off because i started it for the first time in two weeks today put my foot on the break and the rear brake line burst. So it is decommisioned till i have time to fix it.
