have looked in the search page and couldnt find anything on this.
What trucks or cars should i look for to get an auto tranny for my 250 ? i have found an original auto shift column from a 69 truck so it will all look stcok. What years cars or truck can i get an automatic out of?

Darn near any rearwheel drive GM truck or car will work. Far as I remeber all the small black V8s, the V6,s and in-line sixes will bolt up. Most will proably take what the 6 dishes out too. I'm not sure about the big block bolt pattern, but I think they will work too.

Turbo350 probably be the cheapest way to go...70 to early 80 novas, malibus, Caprices, truck are a good starting point.

Several of the BB members have done 700R4 retrofits.I think that is what I will eventually do.I think the 6 has more than enough torque to handle that.It would give you much better highway manners.I would like to find out if a 200R4 is stout enough for the 6.It might be a cheaper buy in.
The overdrive will help on the road since the 6 doesn't like to wind as tight as a smallblock.

As far as a th350 goes, I compleatly agree with what he says, just don't forget that you will need the shift linkage and auto tranny X-member out of a pickup! I'm not sure what years interchange on that stuff after 72....

you will also need a starter to go with the transmission. The starter you have now bolts to your manual trans. With a th350 the strarter bolts to your motor. You also need a automatic flywheel.

the 200 4R is an outstanding tranny and would be the ideal way to push your truck around. in some ways it is better than a 700 R4, but with the lower output of an inline, the few areas of the 200 4R that is worse, would never show up.

Thanks guys, i wasnt sure what cars and /or trucks i should start looking at in the boneyards. Plenty of them down here so, i'll keep in touch and let ya know what i come up with.
the th350 will probably be my first choice.
Andy, (and other Buckeyes), will see ya in July, if not sooner.

(thanks Burnsman!) 71 SWB Stepside, was a 250, now is a 402 Big Block with 4 speed and 3.73's ( was crushed by a tree, bed sold, motor pulled) was my first truck!... oh well... 72 LWB 4x4 350 4-speed 3.08's posi wearing army olive drab green (SOLD!) 68 BURB 50TH LOOKALIKE work in progress, soon to have 250-I6 with a 3-speed on the tree 4.11's and posi ( currently sitting in back yard tarped awaiting time, $$$, and lots of love!) 67 1 TON- work truck 396 sm 420 4-speed, flat bed 4.57 gears "big red" (my first landscape truck, very rusty and crusty! but still gets the job done when needed!)
