oil pressure sensor installation
Hello,
I am trying to install an oil pressure gauge on my 1972 C10 with 350cid engine. It has an idiot light which is wired to a pressure switch located next to the distributor. I want to keep the light. Any suggestions for sensor installation? I tried to remove the plug located near the oil filter, but no luck yet. I think the plug is 1/4" allen screw, but not sure because it has a good bit of paint in it. I tried to remove it with a 1/4 allen wrench, but rounded it out some. Thanks for any help. |

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
Put a tee under your existing sensor. That way you can keep your idiot lite and hook up your new line in the same place. You can buy a tee with one male end and 2 female ends at the parts store. Clean and simple.

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
Thanks, does anyone have a picture of this?
My first choice would be to mount the sensor in a different spot from the switch, but so far I have not been able to dislodge the old plug. Any suggestions on how to remove the plug above the oil filter? Thanks. |

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
I just did this but I did use the original spot where the idiot light switch is installed (next to distributor). Mine was 1/8" NPT so I put a nipple and a tee there and reinstalled the idiot light switch. My gauges are mechanical so I put a copper tube (1/8") to the tee and the gauge.

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
Thanks for the link and the information.
I am installing a temp and oil pressure gauge. Looks like I will use the oil pressure location next to the distributor like you did since I can't break the plug loose at the oil filter location. I located my temp sensor in the passenger side cylinder head(350 cid). There was a temp switch in the hole which was used for emissions vacuum advance control. |

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
Good luck. I wish I had that spot on the cylinder head. My temp sensor is in the water outlet for my 283V8.

Re: oil pressure sensor installation
Just thought I would post how I actually wound up installing my oil pressure sensor.
I tried the tee arrangement up near the distributor, but it wouldnt fit due to my HEI distributor. I finally noticed that the plug above the oil filter is accessible from the side of the truck between the frame and the fender sheet metal with a long(12" installer) drill bit. I drilled the plug out with a 1/4" bit, then used a #5 bolt extractor to remove the plug. So... now I have an oil pressure sensor located above the oil filter and an oil pressure switch in the stock location near the distributor. |
